    Notes: Outsourcing is a management approach by which an organization delegates some non-core functions to specialized and efficient service providers. In the era of "global market" and "e-economy", outsourcing is one of the main pillars of the new way to conceive the relationships among companies. Despite outsourcing large diffusion, huge business cases and big deals of documentation available on network or press, there is no structured procedure able to support the govern of the evolution of a generic outsourcing process. In accordance with the principles of total quality management, this paper describes a proposal of a new approach for managing outsourcing processes. The model, which can be easily adapted to different application fields, has been conceived with the main aim of managing strategic decisions, economic factors and human resources. The approach is supported by different decision and analysis tools, such as benchmarking techniques, multiple criteria decision aiding (MCDA) methods, cost analysis, and other process-planning methodologies. An application of the method to a real case is also provided.

    Notes: Purpose - Analysis and comparison of three existing indicators of the air quality: the American air quality index, the French Atmo, and the Italian Indice di Qualità dell'Aria. Design/methodology/approach - International general and organic regulations to control air quality do not exist yet. Consequently many countries have independently implemented specific indicators to monitor the air pollution and then alert people of resulting health risks. The paper focuses on three of them. Each one is independently presented showing the peculiarities. Therefore, these indicators are compared to identify the features they have in common, as well as those that set them apart, and to figure out which are either restrictive or permissive, and what are their qualities and drawbacks. Findings - The three mentioned indicators convert the real health risk due to air pollution into numerical information, in different ways. Doing this, they carry out some simplifications or assumptions, which can be questionable. The main difficulty is to understand if the indicators aggregate the different pollutant concentrations consistently with the real effects on human health. Research limitations/implications - This paper analyses only three specific indicators of the air quality, selected among the existing ones. Practical implications - Indicators should carefully be analysed to understand if they properly represents the real effects of pollutants on human health. The most critical aspect to consider is the aggregation of the different pollutant concentrations in one information. Originality/value - This paper analyses the efficacy of representation of some air quality indicators. It discusses if indicators aggregation is consistent with the real effects on human health.

    Notes: Abstract An approach based on multiple-criteria decision aid (MCDA) methods has been introduced for the prioritization of technical/engineering design requirements during the quality function deployment (QFD) process. The proposed method allows the avoidance of the rigid procedure under which the relationship matrix coefficients are turned from an ordinal into a cardinal scale. A comparison analysis is carried out between the “traditional” approach and the proposed one. A numerical example is also provided so as to highlight the main differences between the two methods.

    Notes: Abstract Solitary or multiple circumscribed osteolytic areas are described in seven patients, selected from 250 patients with homozygous β-thalassaemia (Cooley's anaemia). On X-ray examinations, these areas appear as purely osteolytic lesions with well-defined margins not associated with sclerosis. The possible mechanisms are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The distribution of lanthanum on the taste disc of the frog,Rana esculenta, afteren bloc staining of the tongue with lanthanum nitrate was studied at the ultrastructural level by means of scanning electron microscopy (in the secondary electron mode or in the back scattered electron mode), energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis, transmission electron microscopy and electron spectroscopic imaging. It was consistently found that lanthanum distribution on the surface of the taste disc is not homogeneous and that the surface of putative receptor cells is in contact with strongly lanthanum-positive material. Calcium co-localizes with lanthanum at that level. These results suggest that different microenvironments exist at the surface of the taste disc and that this could be relevant to the receptor function.

    Notes: Summary The ultrastructure and distribution of intramembrane particles in the chemoreceptor surface of the frog taste organ have been studied by means of freeze-fracture. Sustentacular, wing, mucous cells and two different types of putative taste cells were found to reach the free surface of this chemoreceptor. Each of these cell types was characterized by a different pattern and density of intramembrane particles in the free surface. Wing cells displayed a relatively low number of large intramembrane particles (11.1 ± 1.4 nm in diameter). Particles of similar size were also present in a much higher concentration in the membrane of cylinder-ending putative taste cells. In microvilli-ending putative taste cells, mucous cells, and sustentacular cells, small intramembrane particles were observed (6.8 ± 0.78, 6.9 ± 1.3, 7.2 ± 0.7 nm in diameter, respectively). The density of these particles was higher in the sustentacular cells than in the other two cell types. These data provide evidence that there are two morphologically distinct types of putative taste cells in the frog taste organ, demonstrating that they are characterized by different pattern of intramembrane particles in their free surface. Furthermore, the present results support previous findings indicating that wing and sustentacular elements represent two different cell types.

    Notes: Summary Systemic Sclerosis (SSc; scleroderma) is associated with several immunological abnormalities, including altered proportion between lymphocyte subsets. Peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets from 25 patients with SSc were studied by two-colour flow cytometry using monoclonal antibodies against CD45RA and CD29 markers, which allow a dissection of CD4+ and CD8+ populations into ‘naive’ and ‘memory’ subsets. A decrease of the percentage of CD8+ (p〈0.05) and of CD8+ CD29+ (p〈0.001) cells was observed compared to that in 20 age and sex-matched controls. These abnormalities were not significantly associated with the extension of cutaneous disease or other clinical features of SSc nor with treatment, pattern of autoantibodies or HLA phenotype.

    Notes: We used a panel of histochemical techniques to identify and characterize the cell-associated extracellular material at the surface of the frog's taste organ. We employed morphological and histochemical techniques using both the light microscope and the electron microscope. Results show that the apical, external aspect of cells reaching the surface of the taste organ is in close contact with a layer of amorphous material. The histochemical characteristics of this material vary according to the cell type with which it is in contact. Three different microenvironments can be identified at the surface of the frog's taste organ: type 1 microenvironment is associated with the superficial layer of mucus (secretory) cells; type 2 microenvironment characterizes the surface of the so-called wing cells, which reach the surface of the taste organ as thin laminae running among mucus cells; and type 3 microenvironment shrouds the free endings of putative taste cells and is rich in calcium and lipids. Type 2 and type 3 microenvironments fix peroxidase (a sapid macromolecule) with increasing affinity. We conclude that highly differentiated microenvironments exist at the surface of the frog's taste organ, and these could play a role in the chain of biological events leading to the taste sensation. Furthermore, characterization of the cellassociated, specific microenvironments can help clarify the role of the different cell types in the frog's taste organ.
