    Notes: Abstract The study presents a climatic classification based on energy exchanges between man and the surrounding atmosphere. Variables that affect man's heat balance are included in a scheme that produces a single value describing the insulation requirements for maintenance of thermal equilibrium in familiar terms. The approach allows for the interpretation of a computed clo value, derived from standard meteorological data, as a unitary index of the body-environment energy flux. Hourly values were computed using data from 77 meteorological stations across Canada for the months September to April for a 10 year period. Seasonal maps are presented illustrating a marked zonal character and the thermal conditions both for "day-time" and "night-time" hours. The scheme enables classification of climates in quantitative terms with meaningful implications as regards man's behavioural response to climate.

    Notes: Abstract In this work, a BHK21 clone producing a recombinant antibody/cytokine fusion protein was used to study the dependence of cell metabolism on the glucose and glutamine levels in the culture medium. Results obtained indicate that both glucose and glutamine consumptions show a Michaelis-Menten dependence on glucose and glutamine concentrations respectively. A similar dependence is also observed for lactate and ammonia productions. The estimated value of the Michaelis constant for the dependence of lactate production on glucose (K Glc Lac) was 1.4 ± 0.1 mM and for the dependence of ammonia production on glutamine (K Gln Amm) was 0.25 ± 0.11 mM and 0.10 ± 0.03 mM, at glucose concentrations of 0.28 mM and 5.6 mM respectively. At very low glucose concentrations, the glucose to lactate yield decreased markedly, showing a metabolic shift towards lower lactate production. This␣metabolic shift was also confirmed by the significant increase in the specific oxygen consumption rate also observed at low glucose concentrations. Although it was␣highly dependent on glucose concentration, the oxygen consumption also increased with the increase in␣glutamine concentration. At very low glutamine concentrations, the glutamine to ammonia yield increased, showing a more efficient glutamine metabolism.

    Notes: Abstract To assess the thermal component of human climate, the adequacy of two body-environment energy balance models is tested. Requirements are that these models should include the full range of atmospheric variables using a system which embraces both the attributes of those exposed and the functional attributes of the environment. They should also account for thermal stress on the body as well as the feedback thermophysiological responses as a result of that stress, and produce a unitary thermal index. Based on detailed field assessment, the study provides an interpretation of index values in terms of thermal sensation and pleasantness using standardised verbal scales. Detailed statistical analysis shows that the associations between index values and thermal sensation votes are strong giving correlation coefficients in the order of 0.86 which is considerably larger than those from comparable results reported in the literature. Optimal thermal conditions for sedentary activity appear to be located in the zone of vasomotor regulation against heat, subjectly interpreted as slightly warm, rather than precisely at the point of minimum heat stress. Sensitivity of model output and thermal sensation are greater in the zone of heat stress than in the zone of cold stress.

    Notes: Abstract A body-atmosphere energy exchange model (BIODEX) using heat transfer theory and empirical relationships is described which predicts the change in body core temperature during exercise as an index of thermal strain. Index values may be interpreted as the length of the period of activity before the heat load on the body causes internal body temperature to rise to critical levels. The performance of the model tested under controlled laboratory conditions using human subjects was found to be reliable. BIODEX is used to show the thermal significance of midsummer climatic conditions in New Zealand for those jogging out-doors.

    Notes: Abstract The microclimate in the understorey and in two canopy gaps of different size (249 m2 and 12.6 m2) within a temperate rainforest in northern New Zealand were characterised using net all-wave radiation (Q *), vapour pressure deficit (VPD), vertical air temperature gradient (VTG), and maximum and minimum air temperatures. Hemispherical fisheye photographs were used to define the exposure to the sky at each microclimate recording site both within and between gaps, and in the understorey. Under condiions of clear skies during the summer, with the sun close to its maximum altitude, the large gap centre had a mean daytime (0700–1700 hours)Q * of 452 W/m2. This value was similar to that estimated for an open field nearby, but three times greater thanQ * at the centre of the small gap, and six times greater than in the understorey. The east and west sides of both gaps had higher values ofQ * than the north and south sides. BothQ * and mean daily maximum temperature were strongly correlated with the amount of sky exposure. VPD and VTG were higher in gaps than in the understorey, with maximum values for both variables occurring at the centre of the large gap.

    Notes: Abstract The hydrodynamic behaviour of a 60 l three-phase airlift bioreactor, of the concentric draught tube type, with an enlarged degassing zone has been studied. Ca-alginate beads were used as the solid phase. Airflow rate (from 1.9 to 90.2 l/min), solids loading (0% to 40% (v/v)) and solids density (1016 and 1038 kg/m3) were manipulated and their influence on solids and gas holdup, circulation and mixing times and in the interstitial liquid velocity was determined. Riser and downcomer solids holdup was found to decrease with the increase of airflow rate and to increase with solids loading and density. On the contrary, gas holdup in the riser and in the downcomer increased with airflow rate and decreased with solids loading and density. By increasing airflow rate, a decrease in circulation time was observed while the effects of solids loading and density were negligible. Mixing time decreased with airflow rate, increased with solids density, in the studied range, and presented a maximum for solids loading of approximately 20% (v/v).
