    Notes: Conclusion Cd added to the nutrient solution at 1 mg·L−1 significantly reduced growth of alligatorweed and purple nutsedge. Both plant species increased about threefold in Cd content when exposed to the added Cd over the 3 to 4 wk periods. A significant difference existed between the two insect species in their response to Cd; the alligatorweed flea beetle was very sensitive to Cd levels in the alligatorweed and the nutsedge moth was virtually unaffected by the levels in the purple nutsedge and diet. These results implied that the alligatorweed/alligatorweed flea beetle system might serve as a sensitive bioassay for heavy metal pollution in sewage effluent, particularly since alligatorweed has been considered as a potential biological filter for effluent (Wolvertonet al. 1975). Other trace elements may be involved in the biogeography of plants and insects and would merit investigation.

Les larves recouvertes d'herbicides réduisent le poids sec de 71% pour les Cyperus jaunes de 4 semaines et de 80% celui des plants de 2 semaines de Cyperus jaune dans les 15 jours qui suivent le lâcher. Cette approche intégrée n'était apparemment pas pratique cependant parce que les larves endommagent au hasard les récoltes non visées, coton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) et navet (Brassica rapa L.). Les larves les plus mûres tuent environ 3% des plants de coton et 14% des plants de navet. Les larves nouvellement écloses sont très sensibles aux herbicides. Les larves âgées sont moins spécifiques de l'hôte que les nouvellement écloses. L'emploi de la dispersion répétée des jeunes larves deB. verutana est encore la meilleure méthode connue pour utiliser les insectes dans la lutte contre le Cyperus.
    Notes: Abstract Feeding by 10-day old mid-instar larvae of the native moth,Bactra verutana Zeller, coated with solutions of bentazon [3-isopropyl-1 H-3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide] or glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine], reduced the dry weight of purple (Cyperus rotundus L.) or yellow nutsedge (C. esculentus L.) an average 25% more than did uncoated larvae. The herbicide-coated larvae reduced dry weight by 71% for 4-week yellow nutsedge and by 80% for 2-week purple nutsedge plants within 15 days after release. This integrated approach was apparently not pratical, however, because larvae randomly damaged the non-target crops, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and turnip (Brassica rapa L.). The more mature larvae killed about 3% of the cotton and 14% of the turnip plants. Newly-emerged larvae were highly sensitive to the herbicides. Mature larvae are less host-specific than are newly-emerged larvae. Therefore, the use of repeated broadcasts of newly-emergedB. verutana larvae is still the best method known for using insects to control nutsedge.
