    Notes: Summary 12 normal and 12 infarcted animals were continuously exposed (23 hrs/day) to 115 mg/cu m carbon monoxide for 14 weeks; 6 normal and 6 infarcted animals were allowed to breath ambient air. Blood was drawn weekly for hematologic studies, and the ECG was also recorded. The general well being of the animals was assessed by alertness, food and water intake, stool consistency, respiratory and heart rates, body weight, and rectal temperature. At the conclusion of the exposure period the animals were sacrificed for gross and microscopic observation of the heart and other tissues. Throughout the exposure period the animals remained in clinically good health. No obvious untoward signs were noted which could be interpreted as carbon monoxide induced: serum enzymes (CPK, GOT, LDH) or ECG were not characteristically altered; hematologic parameters (Hct, Hb, WBC, RBC, platelets, MCH, MCHC, MCV, and fibrin split products) did not change significantly. COHb averaged 14% in animals exposed to carbon monoxide, and 1.3% in air breathing animals.

    Notes: Summary Functional changes in the intestinal responsiveness to a fixed. dose of acetylcholine were studied in muscle strips removed from young adult male rats previously exposed to whole body gamma radiation. In the irradiated rat the responsiveness to a fixed dose of acetylcholine was found to be augmented in the small intestine but not in the colon. Similar motor patterns for the small intestine were found when muscle strips from adrenalectomized rats were studied. Preradiation adrenalectomy further exaggerated the post-radiation sensitivity of the rat small intestine to acetylcholine. Hypophysectomy prior to either adrenalectomy and/or whole body radiation was associated with an absence of augmented small intestinal motor activity following administration of acetylcholine. The response of the large bowel to acetylcholine, however, was not modified by adrenalectomy and/or hypophysectomy. These observations suggest an endocrine component to the acute 3–5 day intestinal radiation syndrome.

    Notes: Abstract A common approach to understanding the role of hemodynamics in atherogenesis is to seek relationships between parameters of the hemodynamic environment, and the distribution of tissue variables thought to be indicative of early disease. An important question arising in such investigations is whether the distributions of tissue variables are sufficiently similar among cases to permit them to be described by an ensemble average distribution. If they are, the hemodynamic environment needs be determined only once, for a nominal representative geometry; if not, the hemodynamic environment must be obtained for each case. A method for classifying distributions from multiple cases to answer this question is proposed and applied to the distributions of the uptake of Evans blue dye labeled albumin by the external iliac arteries of swine in response to a step increase in flow. It is found that the uptake patterns in the proximal segment of the arteries, between the aortic trifurcation and the ostium of the circumflex iliac artery, show considerable case-to-case variability. In the distal segment, extending to the deep femoral ostium, many cases show very little spatial variation, and the patterns in those that do are similar among the cases. Thus the response of the distal segment may be understood with fewer simulations, but the proximal segment has more information to offer. © 2000 Biomedical Engineering Society. PAC00: 8719Uv, 8719Xx

    Notes: Abstract The effects of the outflow of aortic blood through the celiac and renal arteries on the flow field in the external iliac arteries were studied under steady and physiologically realistic pulsatile flow conditions. Laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements were made close to the medial, lateral, ventral, and dorsal walls of the external iliac branches of a clear, flow-through replica of a porcine aorta and its daughter vessels. The outflow from each branch of the replica was controlled so that the infrarenal aortic flow rate and the flow partition at the aortic trifurcation were the same for all experiments. LDV measurements were made with flow exiting through both the renal and celiac artery ostia, only the celiac ostium, and neither ostium. The steady flow results indicate that while the outflow through the renal arteries did not have a significant effect on near wall shear rate in the external iliac arteries, the flow through the celiac artery did. However, in pulsatile flow, three indices of near wall velocity in the iliac arteries were unaffected by celiac artery outflow, while a fourth showed a small effect that can be attributed to differences in minimum velocity. These results indicate that reliable simulations of blood flow in the external iliac arteries can be carried out without including the renal and celiac vessels, provided that the correct infrarenal flow wave is used. They also demonstrate that the flow field downstream of a region, such as a branch, that strongly alters the flow, can be nearly independent of the velocity field entering the region. © 2000 Biomedical Engineering Society.     Notes: Abstract A computer-based system is described to measure objectively the geometric parameters of arteries from pairs of projection angiograms. This technique, which employs backprojection to define the vessel axes in 3-D space, was used to obtain selected parameters of coronary artery geometry from radiographic images of autopsy hearts. Results of the first 30 cases are presented, focussing on the distribution of the geometric parameters of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) and its first two major branches. The derived parameters include the angle between the left circumflex artery and the LAD; the angles between the LAD and its early diagonal and septal perforator branches; distances between branch points; and tortuosity. The geometric parameters vary considerably, presumably contributing to a corresponding variability in local hemodynamic and mechanical stresses. Most parameters are uncorrelated. One exception is the angle at the origin of the second diagonal branch, which is positively correlated (p〈0.01) with the distance between the ostia of the first two diagonal vessels; this correlation could reflect the existence of “target” perfusion regions. No relation between geometric parameters and age or gender was seen. In this sample, blacks had a larger angle at the left main bifurcation than whites (p〈0.05).

    Notes: Experimental kinetic data are most conveniently correlated by the integrated form of the differential rate equations which the reactions are presumed to obey. A new method of obtaining an approximate integral solution of the differential equations is described and applied to a set of three consecutive competitive reactions.The approximate integral solution is used to correlate experimental data on systems whose stoichiometry would indicate a consecutivecompetitive mechanism. The compositions of the reaction mixes are predicted with a standard error of estimate of less than 4% of the original concentration of the initiating reactant, in most cases less than 2%. The estimates of the rate constants, found by fitting the approximate solution to the data, are within experimental error of the values obtained by differentiation of the published results.
