    Notes: We have studied the dependence of the electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) on the ultraviolet (UV) cure of the solution of monomer and liquid crystal. The kinetics of UV polymerization and its effect on the morphology of the phase separated droplets of liquid crystal determine the switching voltage, response time, and luminance of the PDLC. Using a series of statistically designed experiments, we have mapped the dependence of these responses on the weight fraction of liquid crystal, the temperature of the cell during cure, and light intensity. Temperature and composition are strongly coupled parameters that influence switching voltage, luminance, and response times. Switching voltages are minimized at 4–5 V for an 8 μm cell gap over a large region of temperature-composition space. An abrupt transition line occurs through that space. On one side of the transition line, voltage increases linearly either as temperature increases or composition decreases, and on the other side of the line, voltage is constant. Analyses of decay times, the slower response time of the PDLC, show that the times peak along a line of points in temperature-composition space that is close to the transition line for increasing switching voltages. We present these results as contours on the same graphs and relate them to our understanding of the phase separation process in the PDLC mixture. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) is an universal methyl donor for biological systems in transmethylation reactions. Another metabolic pathway involving S-adenosylmethionine is initiated with the release of -CH3 from the molecule and the formation of S-adenosylhomocysteine and then homocysteine and cysteine, a precursor of the main cellular antioxidant glutathione. Chronic ethanol consumption could affect the bioavailability of amino acids such as methionine. Our purpose was to determine the effect of chronic alcohol feeding during gestation or lactation on hepatic S-adenosyl-methionine, S-adenosylhomocysteine, DNA methylation and homocysteine serum concentration at the end of the lactation period (21-day-old offspring). Wistar dam rats were fed with alcohol during periconceptional, gestation and lactation periods (alcohol-fed rats). This study was conducted with three groups of offspring with different periods of alcohol exposure: control offspring (C), no treatment; and gestation (G) and lactation (L) offspring, exposed to alcohol only during gestation or lactation, respectively. To obtain these last two groups of offspring, on parturition day control newborn rats were cross-fostered to alcohol-fed dams (L) and alcohol new-born rats were cross-fostered to control dams (G). In conclusion, these results indicate that exposure of rats to ethanol during the lactation period affects SAM values more severely than ethanol exposure only during gestation.

    Notes: Background Subjects with IgE responses to betalactams can develop selective or cross-reactive responses after the administration of penicillin derivatives. After the reaction, however, the hapten induces a boosting phenomenon, which may increase the titre and the affinity of the antibody, with the resulting risk of developing allergic reactions to other penicillins.Objective To determine in subjects with selective responses to amoxicillin (AX) and good tolerance to benzylpenicillin (BP) and penicillin V (PV) whether the administration of these compounds induced any change in specificity, measured by either skin or in vitro testing, which could predict the appearance of cross-reactivity.Methods Ten subjects with a selective response to AX were followed-up for 2 years with the periodic administration of penicillin G and V (Group A) and compared with another group composed of 10 persons with identical clinical characteristics but without repeated penicillin administration (Group B). Periodic in vitro and in vivo measurements of specific IgE antibodies were performed at 6-month intervals. Patients were randomized to Group A or B according to their order of inclusion.Results In both groups, skin test reactivity tended to decrease, and although greater in Group A, the difference was not significant compared with Group B. Median RAST values also decreased over time and showed no differences in the exposed group compared with the controls. One patient in Group A became positive to benzylpenicilloyl (BPO), despite becoming negative to AX.Conclusion Subjects with selective IgE responses to side-chain-specific determinants seem to become negative, with no influence from subsequent administration of a closely related penicillin.

    Notes: Abstract— Using experimentally determined data on fibre radius distributions, yarn geometry, matrix and fibre elastic moduli and frictional shear stress at the matrix/fibre interface (obtained by nano-indentation experiments), the failure probability of the composite fibre yarns (after matrix cracking) is estimated. Each fibre is divided into a fixed number of segments above and below the matrix crack. The failure probability on every segment of each fibre is computed using Weibull fibre strength statistics. A fibre is assumed to be broken when the cumulative failure probability for the complete yarn reaches a value of 0.5. The segment and fibre are then selected at “random”, according to their individual failure probabilities. After fibre failure, the broken fibre can only carry the frictional load and the load drop is transferred to its neighbours according to their distances to the broken fibre. The remote stress is then modified to match again the cumulative failure probability of 0.5 and a new fibre is broken. This procedure is repeated until all the fibres are broken. In this way, it is possible to obtain the “characteristic” load carried by the yarn and its corresponding elongation. Fibre extraction and pull-out behaviour are also considered. The roles of different load-transfer laws (from global to highly localised) are examined. The model is applied to simulate the fracture tensile behaviour of individual yarns of SiC/SiC ceramic-matrix composites. The results are compared with those obtained from tensile experiments on SiC/SiC individual yarns. The computed fracture morphology, in terms of individual pull-out lengths, is also compared to the actual SEM fractography of a woven SiC/SiC composite.

    Notes: Abstract— The growth rate of fatigue cracks in two single crystal nickel base superalloys, CMSX-6 and SRR99, along the 〈001〉 planes are presented and rationalised in terms of two interacting crack propagation mechanisms: one attributed to crack tip plastic blunting and the other attributed to the brittle failure of the oxide scales. The role of the oxide scale is twofold as it also wedges the crack and modifies the blunting term through a crack closure effect. On the other hand, a positive effective stress intensity range is required to fracture the oxide scale. Fatigue tests were carried out at different temperatures (500 to 1050°C), frequencies (0.001 to 20 Hz), cycle waveforms and load ratios (0 to 0.9), with starter crack lengths of abut 100 μm. The model predictions match the crack growth rates obtained for both materials. Even though both materials are nickel base superalloys, they have very different oxidation behaviours. CMSX-6 has an improved oxidation resistance over SRR99, however, because of the twofold nature of the oxidation process, which material provides the better life expectancy depends on the applied test temperature and loading cycle.
