Notes: Abstract: Self-diffusion can be studied in binary systems for which appropriate radioisotopes for both constituents of the alloy are available. With respect to the Fe-Al system suitable radioisotopes are available for the Fe component (e.g. 59Fe) but not for Al. In the framework of the Boltzmann-Matano method further insight into the diffusion behaviour of Fe-Al intermetallics can be gained from interdiffusion experiments. The interdiffusion coefficient is related via the modified Darken equation to the tracer diffusivities of the constituents. The thermodynamic factor entering the Darken equation is proportional to the second derivative of the Gibbs free energy, G, of the alloy on the molar fraction of one of the components. These relations can be used to deduce the tracer diffusivity of Al provided that the tracer diffusivity of Fe, the interdiffusion coefficient and the thermodynamic factor are known. The mixing energy, which enters G, could be calculated on the basis of the thermodynamical data or by means of non-empirical calculations. We suggest for the latter ab initio calculations the use of modern non-empirical methods.

Notes: Abstract The depth-dependent, seasonal, and diel variability of virus numbers, dissolved DNA (D-DNA), and other microbial parameters was investigated in the northern Adriatic Sea. During periods of water stratification, we found higher virus abundances and virus/bacterium ratios (VBRs) as well as a larger variability of D-DNA concentrations at the thermocline, probably as a result of higher microbial biomass. At the two investigated stations, virus densities were highest in summer and autumn (up to 9.5 × 1010 1−1) and lowest in winter (〈 109 1−1); D-DNA concentrations were highest in summer and lowest in winter. The VBR as well as an estimated proportion of viral DNA on total D-DNA showed a strong seasonal variability. VBR averaged 15.0 (range, 0.9–89.1), and the percentage of viral DNA in total D-DNA averaged 18.3% (range, 0.1–96.1%). An estimation of the percentage of bacteria lysed by viruses, based on 2-h sample intervals in situ, ranged from 39.6 to 212.2% d−1 in 5 m and from 19.9 to 157.2% d−1 in 22 m. The estimated contribution of virus-mediated bacterial DNA release to the D-DNA pool ranged from 32.9 to 161% d−1 in 5 m and from 10.3 to 74.2% d−1 in 22 m. Multiple regression analysis and the diel dynamics of microbial parameters indicate that viral lysis occasionally could be more important in regulating bacterial abundances than grazing by heterotrophic nanoflagellates.

Notes: Abstract Interstitial solid solutions could be formed at the matrix–fibre interface in the processing of metal matrix composites. Typically these solutions are of small concentrations and the solubility is usually diffusion-controled. To calculate the diffusivity, a model of the interstitial solid solution is used which gives the possibility of choosing whether octahedral or tetrahedral interstitial positions are occupied by the fibre atoms dissolved in the matrix. Analysis of Ag–C and Cu–C solid solutions allow a comparison of the occupation of the interstitial positions and its temperature dependences. The results obtained on the basis of non-empirical calculations predict the preferable occupation of octahedral positions up to T ∼ 1200 K. This confirms the structure of the interstitial solid solution. In the framework of this model we calculate the heights of diffusion barriers and the temperature dependences of carbon diffusion in silver and copper hosts.

Notes: Abstract A theory of characteristic classes of foliations is discussed which is based on the cohomology of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. One of the original results of the article is a theorem stating that the characteristic classes are nontrivial.

Notes: Abstract The survey is based on works on the theory of foliations reviewed in RZhMatematika during 1970–1979. The basic topics are the classification of foliations, characteristic classes, the qualitative theory of foliations (holonomy, growth of leaves, etc.), and special classes of foliations (compact foliations, Riemannian foliations, etc.).
