Notes: Configurations of B-site cations in the perovskite-structured ternary system Pb(Mg1/2W1/2)O3-Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMW-PNN-PT) of interest for multilayer ceramic capacitors were studied by transmission electron microscopy. The evaluated specimens were four PMW/PNN/PT compositions: 10/30/60, 30/30/40, 50/30/20, and 70/30/0 on a compositional line with 30 mol % PNN content. A "core-shell-type'' microstructure was seen in the 10/30/60 specimen composition, which has a "normal'' ferroelectric characteristic, along with typical ferroelectric domain structures. The B-site cation ordering in the 10/30/60 composition was not detectable in the selected-area electron diffraction pattern. On the other hand, an "island-type'' microstructure, consisting of clusters (∼1–2 nm) with B-site cations 1:1 ordered, was observed in the 30/30/40, 50/30/20, and 70/30/0 compositions, which have relaxor-type characteristics. In the 70/30/0 composition, larger stripe-shaped ordered regions (∼20–200 nm) were also observed. These ordered regions extended from the center of the grain to the boundary. On the basis of the results obtained, origins of the dielectric behaviors for this system, that is, a "normal'' ferroelectric, a relaxor ferroelectric, and an antiferroelectric, were discussed from the point of view of the B-site cation configurations. The PMW component plays two roles in this ternary system, corresponding to its content. When the PMW content is low, Mg and W ions are disordered in the B-site sublattice, and interrupt the ferroelectricity. With increasing PMW content, small ordered clusters (∼1–2 nm) are formed, which are believed to localize superparaelectric potentials effectively and dominate a degree of a diffuse phase transition in the solid-solution system.

Notes: The period P and Q-value of the Chandler wobble are two fundamental functional of the Earth's internal physical properties and global geodynamics. We revisit the problem of the estimation of P and Q, using 10.8 yr of modern polar motion as well as contemporary atmospheric angular momentum (AAM) data. We make full use of the knowledge that AAM is a major broad-band excitation source for the polar motion. We devise two optimization criteria under the assumption that, after removal of coherent seasonal and long-period signals, the non-AAM excitation is uncorrelated with the AAM. The procedures lead to optimal estimates for P and Q. Our best estimates, judging from comprehensive sets of Monte Carlo simulations, are P= 433.7 ± 1.8 (1σ) days, Q=49 with a la range of (35, 100). In the process we also obtain (as a by-product) an estimate of roughly 0.8 for a ‘mixing ratio’ of the inverted-barometer (IB) effect in the AAM pressure term, indicating that the ocean behaves nearly as IB in polar motion excitation on temporal scales from months to years

Notes: The induction of a radial polarity by environmental stimuli was studied at the cellular and organ levels, with phototropism chosen as a model. The light gradient acting on the whole coleoptile was opposed to the light direction acting upon individual cells in the classical Buder experiment, irradiating from the inside out. Alternatively, the stimulus was administered to the coleoptile tip with a microbeam-irradiation device. Tropistic curvature was assayed as a marker for the response of the whole organ, whereas cell elongation and the orientation of cortical microtubules were taken as markers for the responses of individual cells. Upon tip irradiation, signals much faster than basipetal auxin transport migrate towards the base. The data are discussed in terms of an organ polarity that is the primary result of the asymmetric light signal and affects, in a second step, an endogenous radial polarity of epidermal cells.

Notes: Phytochromes are molecular light switches by virtue of their photochromic red/far-red reversibility. The His-324 residue next to the chromophore-linked Cys-323 plays a critical role in conferring photochromism to the tetrapyrrole chromophore in native phytochrome A. The chromophore appears to be enclosed between the amphiphilic α-helical chains in a hydrophobic pocket. The absorbance maxima of both the Pr and the Pfr forms of pea phytochrome A are blue-shifted by 10 and 20 nm, respectively, upon C-terminal truncation. We speculate that the quaternary structure of the phytochrome A molecule involves some interactions of the C-terminal half with the chromophore domain. The Pfr conformation of phytochrome includes an amphiphilic α-helix of the amino terminal chain, which occurs in 113 ms after picosecond photoisomerization of the Pr form. Compared to α-helical folding, unfolding of the α-helix occurs faster in about 310 μs upon phototransformation of the Pfr form of phytochrome A. The photochromic transformation of phytochrome A modulates protein kinase-catalysed phosphorylation sites in vivo and in vitro, but only a subtle local change in conformation is detectable in the phosphorylated phytochromes. This suggests that the post-translational modification serves as a surface label, rather than a transducer-activating trigger, for the recognition of a putative phytochrome receptor.
