    Notes: A large self-potential anomaly was outlined in 1963–64 at Tantahuatay near Hualgayoc in the Andes of northern Peru. Peak value recorded was–1842 millivolts–thus making it one of the strongest, or perhaps the strongest, SP anomaly ever measured. A lack of detailed geological data precludes the formulation of an adequate explanation for the Tantahuatay anomaly, but geological and mineralogical similarities with the well-documented Venencocha anomaly near Cerro de Pasco, Peru (Kruger and Lacy, 1949), suggest that the anomaly arises from sulfuric acid associated with the mineral alunite. The anomaly obviously cannot be explained by the half-cell mechanism of Sato and Mooney (1960), who place a limit of 700 millivolts on self-potential anomalies over sulfide bodies. Further study of the Tantahuatay anomaly would be of interest in understanding self-potential mechanisms in general.

    Notes: Antibodies prepared against the collagen C-chain derived from human placenta specifically stain the epidermal basement membrane of normal human skin as well as the basement membrane surrounding the skin appendages and capillaries. Using the antibodies, it was observed that all basement membranes in untreated psoriatic plaques appear fragmented and separated into several layers. The results suggest that psoriatic lesions are associated with a general loss of basement membranc integrity which may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

    Notes: Fourier transform infrared measurements on the spectra of the products of the vaporization of silicon/carbon mixtures trapped in solid argon in concert with ab initio calculations using second order many body perturbation theory have resulted in the identification for the first time of two vibrational fundamentals, ν3(b1u)=982.9 and ν4(b2u)=382.2 cm−1, of the rhombic ground state structure of Si2C2. The observed frequencies, intensities, and isotopic shifts are in good agreement with the ab initio predictions. Tentative assignments are also made for fundamentals of the linear (SiCCSi) and distorted trapezoidal isomers. The relative energies of the three isomers have been estimated at various ab initio levels. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Salivary glands of autoimmune MRL/1 mice were examined ultrastructurally and by immunoelectron microscopy to further characterize the Sjögren's syndrome-like disease in these animals. Major salivary glands from 12 female and 7 male MRL/1, two female MRL/n, and one female BALB/c mice were examined by electron microscopy and the glands from 4 female MRL/1 mice were subjected to immunoelectron microscopy in order to detect Lyt-1 and Lyt-2 positive lymphoid cells. Mononuclear cell infiltrates were not seen in the salivary gland from the BALE mouse and occurred rarely in glands of MRL/n mice. However, in MRL/1 mice, numerous lymphoid cells were present and acinar cells displayed low cytoplasmic density, cytoplasmic vacuolization and cellular lysis. Lymphoid cells were predominantly Lyt-1 positive although some Lyt-2 positive cells were observed. These results suggest that the MRL/1 mouse represents a useful model for the study of the pathogenesis of Sjogren's syndrome in man.

    Notes: In view of the important role of fibroblast-type collagenase in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease (PD), we investigated the expression of this metalloproteinase in primary cultures of non-stimulated fibroblasts dissected from gingival tissues of patients with generalized moderate and localized severe chronic adult PD. Enhanced hybridization signals for collagenase RNA were observed in 8/8 PD-cases when compared with equivalent RNA amounts extracted from normal fibroblasts. Since both the proto-oncogene c-fos and the “early growth response” gene egr-1 might be involved in the transcriptional regulation of the collagenase gene expression in vivo, we also compared the relative expression of both potential transcriptional factors with collagenase RNA in the same fibroblast cytoplasmic extracts. Hybridization signals indicated elevated RNA amounts for c-fos in 8/8 PD-cases and for egr-1 in 7/8 PD-cases when compared with the cells from non-inflamed tissue. In periodontitis gingival tissue specimens, immunolocalization of collagenase could be confirmed in fibroblasts, macrophages and epithelial cells in situ. Collagenase label was not widely distributed within the tissues, but concentrated at the interface between epithelium and connective tissue. The data provide the first evidence that gingival fibroblasts producing elevated levels of collagenase RNA amounts express also c-fos and egr-1 indicating a crucial role for both genes in cellular proliferation and collagenase expression in gingival and periodontal tissue destruction in vivo.

    Notes: Abstract The immunohistochemical localization of Type III collagen was studied in the dentin from nine patients with dominantly inherited osteogenesis imperfecta (O.I.) and six patients with hereditary opalescent dentin (H.O.D.). The most consistent localization of Type III collagen was found in patients with O.I. Among these patients an indirect relationship existed between the severity of dentinal involvement and the presence of Type III antibody localization. Although a similar but less intense staining could be observed in some cases of H.O.D., the severity of dentinal alterations in H.O.D. was not correlative to the quantitative presence of material reacting with antibodies to Type III collagen. These observations further indicate that O.I. is not only clinically, but biochemically, a heterogeneous condition.

    Notes: Although it has been documented that exogenous antigens of microbial origin are involved in the induction of the local inflammatory responses in human adult periodontitis (AP), endogeneous antigens may contribute to the chronicity of this common disease. In this study, we used the enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) test to enumerate antibody-secreting cells to human collagen Types 1-VI by cells isolated from the gingivae and peripheral blood of AP patients. Analyses of dissociated cells from gingivae of 39 AP patients revealed the presence of high numbers of cells that secrete antibodies to Type I collagen, and to a lesser extent, Type III. Although the majority of such cells produced specific antibodies of the IgG class, IgA- and IgM- anti-collagen -secreting cells were also detected. When compared to the total antibody-producing cells, the numbers of cells forming specific antibodies to collagen Type I were surprisingly high. In contrast, anti-collagen antibody-producing cells were rarely detected in the peripheral blood of patients with adult periodontal disease and only low levels of anti-collagen antibodies were present in the serum. The finding of local production of anti-collagen antibodies in AP suggests that autoimmunity may contribute to the pathogenesis of this common disease.
