Notes: [Auszug] In 1945, I made some measurements on the absorption of cosmic rays in lead near magnetic latitude 22 N. at altitudes varying from 600 ft. to 16,800 ft. in the Himalayas. Two similar telescopes consisting of three Geiger-Miiller tubes each with slabs of lead interposed, connected together in a ...

Notes: [Auszug] WITH the development of the subject of cosmic radiation the need for stations at various heights and in different parts of the world has become increasingly important. Previously, the high-altitude research stations were used for astronomical, astro-physical, meteorological and terrestrial magnetic ...

Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 The dead time of these counters has been found to be of the order of 3 X 10~4 sec., and compares not too unfavourably with that of 2 X 10~4 sec. generally reported for internal cathode counters1. With the use of a single tube preamplifier the counter efficiently recorded more than 4,000 ...

Notes: [Auszug] DURING July 1945, measurements of the intensity of mesotrons passing through 8 cm. of lead at various heights in the Himalayas up to an altitude of 16,800 ft. were made by me and Mela Ram1. During November 1945, I extended these measurements up to 33,000 ft. above sea-level in an ...

    Topics: Medicine
Notes: Abstract Purpose: To define the safety and toxicity of interleukin-4 (IL-4)when administered subcutaneously in patients with AIDS-related Kaposi'ssarcoma (AIDS-KS); to evaluate the effect of IL-4 on immunologic and virologicparameters; and to preliminarily assess the response rate of IL-4 in AIDS-KS. Patients andmethods: Eighteen patients with mucocutaneous, non-visceral AIDS-KS weretreated with IL-4 at a dose of 1 mcg/kg subcutaneously, daily untilunacceptable toxicity or for a maximum period of six months. Twelve(66%) patients had extensive mucocutaneous disease with over 25lesions. Ten patients had received prior systemic chemotherapy. Seventeen hadCD4+ lymphocyte counts less than 200/mm3. Results: The most common adverse effects included headache in78%, fever in 56%, chills in 44%, and edema in44%. Hematologic toxicities consisted of grade 4 neutropenia (less than500/mm3) in 33%, mild anemia in 22%. Transientelevation of liver enzymes was noted in 17%. A transient elevation inCD4+ lymphocyte counts occurred during the first two weeks of therapy. Fourof eleven patients tested showed marked decline in plasma HIV RNA after fourweeks. Partial remission was observed in one patient, lasting six months.Three other patients (17%) had stable disease: 7 weeks in one patient, and 10 weeks in each of the two other patients. Conclusion: Grade 4 neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count〈500/mm3) was the most common hematologic adverse effectwith IL-4 in patients with AIDS-KS. In contrast to in vitro findings, there was a decrease in plasma HIV RNA after four weeks of IL-4 therapy in themajority of patients tested. IL-4 produced minimal anti-tumor effects inAIDS-KS with one partial remission in a patient with CD4 lymphocyte countsover 200/mm3. Further studies of IL-4 in AIDS-KS may beconsidered in patients with better immune status.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird das neue thermogravimetrische Gerät Hi-ResTMTGA2950 vorgestellt.
Notes: Abstract A new thermogravimetric instrument is introduced, Hi-ResTM TGA 2950. The Hi-ResTM TQA gives a significant improvement to TG results. The instrument control parameters are varied as a function of the sample's rate of weight change. This novel feature improves resolution and reduces analysis time. The maximum heating rate and resolution index are user selectable. Data presented demonstrate improved resolution for survey TG thermal curves and very high resolution for difficult to resolve complex materials. Results are demonstrated for many types of samples including: homopolymers, polymer blends, inorganic reference materials, and complex organic mixtures. Hi-Res trademark and patent applied for by TA Instruments, Inc.

Notes: Abstract Traditionally, Modulated DSC™ (MDSC®) [1] has been used to simultaneously measure the heat capacity and heat flow of a sample in a single experiment. As first proposed by Readinget at. in 1992 [2], this complex heat capacity signal (Cp *) can be further deconvoluted into components which are in-phase (C′p) or out-of phase (C′p with the imposed temperature modulation. The vector sum of these components, respectively termed the reversing Cp and kinetic Cp, is equal to the aforementioned complex Cp (Cp *). Recent research has centered around the analysis of these signals and their inclusion into MDSC experiments. For most polymer systems, the contribution of the kinetic Cp is negligible, except at the melt. This signal does contain a small peak at the Tg of PET, but the significance of this peak is to date not clear. Examples of further applications will be presented and discussed, as well as the derivation and interpretation of novel MDSC signals.

Notes: Abstract Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is emerging as a major non-communicable disease in developing countries. Using principal component and Mahalanobis' generalized distance analyses, we examined gene frequency data at 3 polymorphic loci in sedentee urban controls, urban diabetics of the “Punjabi” population along with other comparative populations from North India. Mahalanobis generalized distance analysis suggests relative dissimilarity in the “Punjabi” disease subgroups indicating possible genetic heterogeneity. The genetic distance analysis also identified clinal variation along a north-west to south-east axis in North India.

Notes: Abstract Variation in 13 loci across North India has been mapped using principal components and generalized distance analysis. Significant clinal variation is documented for most systems, and genetic difference bears a relation to geographic distance especially along a north-west-to-southeast inclination. Both caste and geography exert influence over the historically contentious affinities of the Jats.
