Notes: [Auszug] To exclude possible artefacts due to fluctuations of accommodation2 and pupil size, both eyes of one subject (D. G. G.) were fully atropinized. He viewed the screen through artificial pupils (2-8 mm diam.) placed close to the cornea. Special care was taken to centre the pupils3'4. The non-vie wing ...

Notes: Abstract The question of whether population numbers are predictable in coral reef communities is confronted directly by trying to predict abundances of benthic taxa both within and between two reefs on the central Great Barrier Reef. Using models derived via the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH), taxon abundances were found to be more predictable at Davies Reef than at Myrmidon Reef and a significant number of taxa showed consistent predictability patterns in all tests. For most taxa, the predictability of benthic abundances increased steadily with increasing spatial scale. Water depth figured prominently in almost all of the models obtained, emphasizing its importance as a physical determinant of local taxon abundances.

Notes: Summary Leaves of P-deficient wheat plants were damaged after 1 mM P was included in the previously zero P nutrient solution. Wheat plants continuously grown in 1 mM P in modified Hoagland's solution were not damaged. Maximum damage and P accumulation occurred in the apical regions of the youngest leaves. We attributed this leaf damage to the accumulation of abnormally high (in excess of 3 per cent dry weight) amounts of P in the leaves of P-deficient plants from nutrient solution that was nontoxic to plants containing adequate P. re]19720721

Notes: Summary The effect of applying (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride (CCC) or gibberellic acid (GA) as foliar sprays on internodal development of barley was studied. CCC applied to the whole plant at main tiller leaf stages 1, 2 or 3 decreased shoot elongation, and prevented elongation of internode 6 (internode 5 subtended the head). CCC at all stages delayed senescence of the lower leaves. CCC sprayed at all 6 leaf stages and GA sprayed at main tiller leaf stages 1, 2, 3 or 4 reduced plant height at maturity. GA treatment at leaf stages 2, 3 or 4 initially stimulated internodal elongation; elongation of later developed internodes was inhibited resulting in shorter plants at maturity. Only the treatment with GA at leaf stages 5 and 6 resulted in increased plant height.

Description / Table of Contents: Sommaire Dans le but de créer une représentation satisfaisante du comportement dynamique d'un muscle, on passe en revue certaines propriétés mécaniques musculaires connues.
Notes: Abstract In order to find a satisfactory representation of the dynamic behaviour of muscle, some of the known mechanical properties of muscle are examined. A viscoelastic model, consisting of a neurally controlled spring-damper combination connected in parallel with each other and in series with a passive elastic element, is shown to represent a significant number of the properties of muscle. The validity of the model is further tested by comparing the model's response to pulses with experimentally determined contractions of the frog sartorious muscle. The model is shown to fit the isometric contractions produced both by single pulses and by trains of pulses.
