    Notes: Design details and initial results are presented for a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope specifically intended for measurements of ballistic-carrier transmittance through heterostructures. The basic design is of the Besocke type, modified for ballistic electron emission microscopy and spectroscopy (BEEM). This instrument is the first to acquire BEEM spectra below 77 K. Salient features are (1) operation in a liquid-helium storage Dewar to below 6 K, (2) a lateral positioning range of 5 mm at low temperature, and (3) lateral drift rate less than 0.2 nm/h at the lowest temperatures. For BEEM spectroscopy, the microscope's high positional stability allows extended signal-averaging at a single location on the sample. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Lactate dehydrogenase (L-Iactate-NAD+ oxidoreductase; EC 1.1.1.27) activity has been assayed in saline extracts of vaginal aspirates obtained from patients attending a Well Woman Clinic and for whom exfoliative cytology was shown to be unequivocally normal. The majority (76 per cent) of premenopausal patients gave aspirate extracts containing less than 25 m units of enzyme while 71 per cent of postmenopausal patients gave aspirate extracts containing more than 50 m units of enzyme. This difference in distribution of activities was highly significant (P = 〈0.001). Analysis of the isoenzyme distribution showed that aspirates from postmenopausal patients contained a lower proportion of isoenzyme LDH-5 (P 〈0.01) and the M subunit (P 〈0.03) and a higher proportion of isoenzymes LDH-3 (P 〈0.001) and LDH-4 (P 〈0.01). There was no significant difference between the social class distributions of the pre- and postmenopausal patients. Lactate dehydrogenase activity was not related to social class or patients' multiparity. No difference in the distribution of enzyme activities was found between those premenopausal patients in the proliferative phase of the menstrual cycle, those in the secretory phase and those receiving hormone therapy.

    Notes: Fifty-four patients with advanced cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary were treated with gestronol (Depostat), 200 mg/week, by intramuscular injection and continuous oral cyclophosphamide, the dose of the latter being varied to maintain the patient's white cell count at about 1.5 X 109/1. A combined partial and complete remission rate of 76 per cent was obtained. The length of survival depended upon the type of remission and the type of remission was markedly affected by the amount of tumour removed at initial laparotomy.

    Notes: The giant magnetoresistance observed in magnetic multilayers arises from spin-dependent scattering and transmission of electrons at the Fermi energy. We will describe a method for the measurement of these quantities in a "CPP" geometry at electron energies both above and below the Fermi energy. Initial results will also be presented. The measurements employ ballistic electron emission spectroscopy (BEES) to detect the ballistic electron current transmitted through a multilayer as a function of magnetic field and electron energy. The experiments are similar in concept to the "spin–valve transistor,"1 except that the injector is the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. This allows the injection energy to be varied over a wide range, and spectra can be correlated with the local surface morphology on a nanometer scale. Spectral broadening due to sample inhomogeneities is also eliminated. We anticipate that BEES measurements and complementary scanning tunneling spectroscopy will provide information that is easily compared with calculations of the multilayer band structure and the electron transmittance versus energy. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ballistic electron emission spectroscopy (BEES) has been performed on a GaAs/Ga0.8Al0.2As/GaAs single-barrier structure at 77 and 7 K. The single-interface model widely used for such structures was found to be inadequate in describing the BEES second-derivative spectrum. A more complete model that incorporates electron-wave interference effects is shown to describe the data accurately and consistently over many spatial locations and samples. This model reproduces all measured features in the BEES second-derivative spectrum resulting from electron-wave interference. At 77 K (7 K) the conduction band offset for x=0.2 is determined to be 145 meV or Qc=0.58 (150 meV or Qc=0.60) in agreement with accepted values. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Obstetrical and neonatal data were analysed for pregnancy outcome in 259 deliveries complicated by first or second trimester vaginal bleeding. There was a high incidence of low birth weight, low gestational age, perinatal death, asphyxia, breech delivery, placental infarcts and small-for-dates term infants. Fetal anomalies were slightly though not significantly increased. Combined suboptimal pregnancy outcome occurred in 29.7 per cent of these deliveries compared to 15.2 per cent of 25 118 concurrent deliveries without reported early pregnancy bleeding (p〈0.0001). The combined risk remained approximately doubled even for primigravidae and for women without prior illness or pregnancy complications. The highest combined risk, 61.5 per cent, was for women with at least two prior abortions, premature births or perinatal deaths and no prior term births. These findings suggest that early gestational vaginal bleeding is one predictor of suboptimal pregnancy outcome.

Of 18 patients with carcinoma of the cervix, three achieved tumour stasis and five achieved very long remissions with a median survival of more than 6 years from the start of treatment.

    Notes: Summary. Guanosine 3′:5′-phosphate (cyclic GMP) in urine has been used to monitor the response of patients with ovarian cancer to treatment. Changes in the cyclic GMP level appear to correlate well with clinical status in that the disappearance of clinically detectable tumour is associated with a drop in the level whereas a tumour recurrence is associated with an elevation. Serially measured cyclic GMP is valuable for detecting a recurrence of tumour growth in patients in clinical remission and can predate any clinical signs by as much as 10 months. In patients who show no response to treatment, cyclic GMP levels in urine are elevated in the majority of specimens collected.
