Notizen: Abstract A new topotactic sintering method using αFe2O3 (obtained from αFeO · OH) and BaCO3 is developed for preparing cheaper grain oriented barium hexaferrite. αFe2O3 and BaCO3 (precipitate grade) are wet mixed in a ball mill in stoichiometric proportion. The mixed slurry is then dried at 110° C for about 12h. The dried powder mixture containing moisture as a binder is uniaxially compacted at 5×106−10×106 kg m−2 pressure. The green compacts are air sintered in the temperature range 1100–1300° C for 1 H. The best results of the sintered ferrite show maximum energy product (BH) max in the range 7−10 kTAm−1. The bulk of commercial requirements for toy magnets etc. may be met by this method of production which eliminates steps like calcination and cost intensive wet magnetic compaction.

Notizen: Abstract Studies on the preparative and microstructural aspects of plasma-dissociated Indian zircon prepared in a specially designed plasma reactor (20 kW) are reported. The vital parameters involved in the process have been optimized for a high degree of dissociation with maximum feed rate. A near total phase separation (ZrO2 and SiO2) has been achieved in the plasma-dissociated zircon spheroids which constitute over 90% of the product. Microstructural studies have revealed that the spheroids are of two types with a distinct difference in the morphology of zirconia crystallites. Most of the spheroids have been found to have well-developed polygonal grains with spherulitic growth of ZrO2 in SiO2 glass. The rest of the spheroids consist of intergrown tabular crystals of monoclinic zirconia set in a matrix of silica. The silica present in the plasma-dissociated zircon has been amorphous and highly reactive, and is leached out using hot NaOH solution to recover fine grain zirconia.
