    Notes: Abstract. One hundred and five 5-week-old male rats were used to study the influence of the stability of an osteotomy on longitudinal overgrowth of the bone. In 45 rats (Group 1) a transverse diaphyseal osteotomy of the right tibia was made; the left tibia was left untreated. In the second 45 rats (Group 2) the right tibia was osteotomized after applying an external fixator; the left tibia underwent a sham operation without osteotomy. Fifteen further rats (Group 3) were used as a nonoperated control group. After being measured at different periods up to 20 weeks, the osteotomized tibiae of the Group 1 (unstable) were 16–25% longer than those of their nontreated limbs (P 〈 0.001). The osteotomized tibiae of the Group 2 (stable) were 6–11% longer than those of the sham-operated opposite limbs (P 〈 0.001). The osteotomized and unstable tibiae were 9–17% longer than the osteotomized and stable tibiae (P 〈 0.001) throughout the whole study. Although several factors have been considered to be responsible for longitudinal bone overgrowth after fracture in young animals, this work suggests that bone's stability plays a decisive role in the final outcome.

    Notes: The microstructural and mechanical characterization of two alloys within the Mg-Ni-YREsystem prepared by casting and subsequent hot extrusion at 400ºC have been carried out. Themicrostructure of both materials consists of a fine-grained magnesium matrix embedding a highvolume fraction of second phases; coarse Mg12RE and long period ordered stacking structure (LPSphase) and fine Mg2Ni particles. Both alloys show high strength values up to 250ºC. The yield stressvalues at room temperature are 295 and 405 MPa for low- and high-alloyed magnesium alloy,respectively. Load transfer from the magnesium matrix to coarse Mg12RE and LPS particles accountfor the high strength of both alloys at temperatures below 250ºC. Above this temperature both alloysexhibit a superplastic behaviour at low stresses with elongations of 700 and 450 % for the low andhigh-alloyed magnesium alloy, respectively

    Notes: The effect of the concentration of Ni, Y and La-rich mischmetal on thethermal stability, microstructure and mechanical properties of ribbons tested in thetemperature range 25-350°C have been evaluated. The low-alloyed materials werecrystalline or partially crystalline while high-alloyed materials were amorphous. Theamorphous alloys experienced numerous transformations during heating above 170°C.A transition in the amorphous state was observed in all alloys prior to the crystallizationstage. The alloy composition determines the sequence of phase transformations duringcrystallization. In general, the structure of crystallised amorphous, even at hightemperatures, is much finer than that of crystalline materials. A MgxREy intermetallicmatrix with other intermetallic phases homogeneously distributed was observed in thecrystallised ribbons with high RE contents. However, a magnesium matrix embeddingother intermetallic phases was the microstructure observed for low-alloyed materials.The amorphous Mg-10Ni-2.5Y2.5-2.5La(MM) showed the higher tensile strengthvalues up to 200 ºC The crystalline Mg-2Ni-1Y-1La(MM) ribbon and the partiallycrystalline Mg-3Ni-1.5Y-1.5La(MM) alloy also exhibited high mechanical resistancelevels which were maintained up to 250 ºC. MgNi10Y2.5La(MM)2.5 amorphous andMgNi3Y1.5La(MM)1.5 crystalline broken above 500 and 400 MPa, respectively, at 100ºC

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les auteurs ont réalisé une étude prospective pour évaluer la sensibilité et la spécificité des radiographies en position forcée dans le diagnostic des insuffisances du ligament croisé antérieur (LCA). Une radiographie en tiroir forcé des deux genoux a d'abord été faite, en utilisant l'appareil Telos, chez 116 patients devant subir une arthroscopie unilatérale. Chez 47 de ces patients une rupture totale ou partielle du LCA a été confirmée par arthroscopie, qui a montrée un ligament intact chez les 69 autres. La différence moyenne de translation entre le genou blessé et le genou sain a été supérieure à 5 mm (p〈0.001) chez les patients ayant une insuffisance du LCA et inférieure à 3 mm chez les autres (une différence de 3 mm a été considérée comme normale). La sensibilité de la méthode a été de moins de 67% et le spécificité de 100%. L'examen clinique a une sensibilité de 70.2% et une spécificité de 98.5%. Ces résultats permettent de penser que, bien qu'une translation supérieure à 3 mm puisse avoir une valeur diagnostique, une moindre différence n'exclut pas une insuffisance du ligament croisé antérieur.
    Notes: Summary A prospective study was carried out to test the sensitivity and specificity of stress radiography in detecting anterior cruciate ligament deficiency in both knees of 116 patients using the Telos device. In 47 of these a total or partial rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament was diagnosed by arthroscopy, while the ligament was intact in the remaining 69 patients. The mean difference in radiological translation between the injured and the normal knee was greater than 5 mm (p〈0.001) in those with anterior cruciate deficiency, and less than 3 mm in the others. A differential displacement of up to 3 mm was considered normal. The sensitivity of the method was less than 67% and the specificity was 100%. Clinical diagnosis had a sensitivity of 70.2% and a specificity of 98.5%. Our findings suggest that, although a differential translation of more than 3 mm can be diagnostic, smaller differences do not rule out anterior cruciate deficiency.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé 33 athlèes se plaignant de lombalgies depuis plus d’un mois avec des radiographies normales de la colonne lombaire ont étéétudiés. Tous ont eu une scintigraphie, et 24 un scanner. A été retenu comme signe de fracture de fatigue, l’existence d’une augmentation de densitéà un niveau vertébral. La scintigraphie montrait une telle augmentation chez 17 des 33 patients et le scanner chez 16 des 24 patients. On conclut que même si la scintigraphie est normale, on ne peut pas rejeter le diagnostic de fracture de fatigue.
    Notes: Abstract  Thirty-three athletes complaining of back pain of more than 1 months’ duration and with normal radiography of the lower spine were all studied by scintigraphy and in 24 of them with single photon emission computerized tomography. A stress fracture was considered present if localized increased uptake was seen at a vertebral level. Scintigraphy showed increased uptake in 17 of 33 patients and single photon emission computerized tomography in 16 of 24 patients.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé L'effet de dépériostage du tiers moyen du fémur sur la croissance osseuse a été étudié chez 70 rats. 70 autres ont été utilisés comme témoins. Les animaux ont été sacrifiés, à intervalles réguliers, une, deux, quatre, huit, douze, seize et vingt semaines après l'opération. La longueur du fémur, le diamètre inter-trochantérien, le diamètre de l'épiphyse fémorale inférieure, le diamètre de la diaphyse et la longueur du tibia ont été mesurés. Un allongement significantif du fémur a été observé seulement à la 4ème semaine, alors qu'il était 1,5% plus long que l'opposé (p. 0.001) mais cela ne s'est pas maintenu. Le diamètre de l'épiphyse inférieure et la longueur du tibia n'ont pas été modifiés. Le diamètre inter-trochantérien était significativement plus court du côté dépériosté à la 2ème semaine, et significativement plus large à la 12ème. Le diamètre diaphysaire des os dépériostés s'est progressivement rétréci par rapport au côté opposé à partir de la 2ème semaine. Ces différences persistent de façon significative à tous les stades de cette étude. Le dépériostage ne détermine qu'un léger allongement temporaire de la longueur de l'os mais une diminution définitive de son diamètre diaphysaire.
    Notes: Summary The effect on bone growth after stripping of the periosteum of the middle third of the femur was investigated in 70 rats. Seventy further animals were used as controls. The animals were serially killed at 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks after operation. The femoral length, intertrochanteric diameter, diameter of the distal epiphysis of the femur, diameter of the femoral diaphysis and the tibial length were measured. Significant lengthening of the femur was noted only after 4 weeks, when it was 1.5% longer than the opposite side (p 0.001), but this was not maintained. The diameter of the distal epiphysis and the tibial length were not significantly affected. The intertrochanteric diameter was significantly shorter on the stripped side at the 2nd week and significantly longer at the 12th. The diaphyseal diameter of the stripped bones was progressively more narrow than the contralateral from the 2nd week. Differences remained significant at all stages of this study. Periosteal stripping yields only a temporary slight increase in bone length with a definite decrease in diaphyseal diameter.

    Notes: Summary An immunocytochemical study focused on the cellular localization of tissue kallikrein along the human and guinea-pig respiratory tracts is reported. A strong immunoreactivity for tissue kallikrein was observed in the seromucous glands of the nasal mucosa, trachea, and bronchi. In these glands, the immunostaining was restricted to the serous component of the acinus whereas mucous cells showed no staining. Since no immunoreactivity to kininogen was observed in any of the tissue constituents of the human and guinea-pig respiratory tree, transudation of the substrate from plasma was considered to be the preferred mode of delivery of the kininogen into the bronchopulmonary interstitium and lumen. Our results provide morphological evidence for the well documented presence of tissue kallikrein in bronchial lavage fluids and support the hypothesis that kinins may be one of the more important mediators involved during acute episodes of asthma and rhinitis.
