    Notes: Abstract: Acute disruption of the cutaneous permeability barrier with either solvents or tape-stripping stimulates a homeostatic metabolic response in the subjacent nucleated layers of the epidermis that results in a rapid restoration of normal permeability barrier function. When the aged epidermal permeability barrier is stressed, it reveals a diminished capacity for recovery, in comparison to young epidermis, analogous to other organs in the aged when stressed. Although the signals that regulate this homeostatic response by the epidermis have not yet been resolved, acute permeability barrier disruption stimulates release of prestored IL-1α, and increased production of potentially regulatory cytokines, including IL-1α and TNFα in the epidermis. In these studies, we addressed the hypothesis that cytokine dysregulation explains the permeability barrier abnormality in aged epidermis, assessing the regulation of IL-1 and TNF signaling in aged vs young mice. To determine whether the IL-1 family of cytokines plays a key role in the permeability barrier abnormality of the aged, permeability barrier recovery rates were compared in transgenic mice lacking the functional IL-1 type 1 receptor vs wild-type mice at various ages. Knockout of the IL-1 type 1 receptor exacerbates the defect in permeability barrier homeostasis that is seen in age-matched, wild-type counterparts. Furthermore, the sluggish permeability barrier recovery in aged epidermis is associated with, and at least in part attributable to, altered expression of the IL-1 family of cytokines and receptors both under basal conditions and after acute barrier perturbations. Whereas modulations in cytokine expression with epidermal permeability barrier perturbation are qualitatively similar in aged epidermis, they greatly differ quantitatively. In contrast, examination of TNFα mRNA and protein basally, and following barrier perturbation revealed no alterations in aged epidermis. Together, these results show that selective alterations in the IL-1 family of cytokines occur with aging and that defects in IL-1 signaling may contribute to the epidermal permeability barrier abnormality of aged skin.

    Notes: Rieger's syndrome which is a congenital progressive, autosomally dominant, ophthalmic anomaly has certain associated somatic dentofacial and systemic features. These extra dentofacial and systemic findings can play very important role in diagnosing this syndrome so as to prevent the ocular complications. This article reports such a case in a 20-yr-old woman and discusses somatic features along with the clinical importance of early diagnosis.

    Notes: Background : Post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome is a common clinical phenomenon of uncertain aetiology.Aim : To test the association between intestinal permeability and irritable bowel syndrome symptoms 2 years after a large waterborne outbreak of bacterial gastroenteritis.Methods : Consecutive adults with Rome I irritable bowel syndrome and controls without irritable bowel syndrome attending a community clinic were enrolled. Intestinal permeability was measured as the ratio of fractional urinary excretions of lactulose and mannitol, and compared among cases vs. controls and predictors of abnormal intestinal permeability were assessed.Results : A total of 218 subjects (132 irritable bowel syndrome cases and 86 non-irritable bowel syndrome controls) completed the study protocol. About 27 (12%) had been diagnosed with the irritable bowel syndrome before the outbreak and 115 (53%) had been ill during the outbreak. Lactulose–mannitol ratios were increased among cases vs. controls (Mann–Whitney mean rank 118.8 vs. 95.3, P = 0.007), and cases were more likely to have a ratio 〉0.020 (P = 0.007). Among cases, those with increased intestinal permeability were more likely to report increased stool frequency. Both irritable bowel syndrome symptoms and male gender, but not diarrhoeal illness during the outbreak, were significant predictors of abnormal permeability.Conclusions : Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms are associated with a subtle increase in intestinal permeability irrespective of prior gastroenteritis. This may improve understanding of the aetiology of both sporadic and post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome.

    Notes: All the nine elastic constants of orthorhombic ammonium fluoroberyllate [(NH4)2.BeF4] have been determined at room temperature (305 K) from the measurement of the intensities of thermal diffuse scattering of X-rays using a single-crystal diffractometer. Monochromatic Mo Kα radiation obtained by reflection from a curved quartz crystal was used. The intensity of diffusely scattered X-rays has been corrected for divergence, polarization, skew correction, absorption, second-order thermal diffuse scattering and general scattering. Isodiffusion contours have been drawn around the 400 node. The values of elastic constants in units of 1010 Nm-2 are C11 = 3.82 (30), C22 = 3.56 (28), C33 = 2.45 (19), C44 = 0.96 (05), C55 = 1.01 (05), C66 = 0.79 (04), C12 = 1.78 (18), C13 = 1.52 (15), C23 = 1.41 (14). An estimate of the Debye temperature has been made by calculating the mean sound velocity in the crystal from these elastic-constant values.

    Notes: From the elastic stiffness constants Cij of ammonium fluoroberyllate at room temperature, wave velocity surfaces have been calculated and are shown in three different sections (XY, YZ, ZX). The mean sound velocity in the crystal has thus been determined and used to calculate the Debye temperature of (NH4)2BeF4. The Debye temperature so determined is 381 K. Some of the bulk elastic properties of polycrystalline (NH4)2BeF4 have also been calculated using the above Cij values.
