Notes: Thin films of the noble metals Ag and Au are prospective candidates for application as electrical contacts in high temperature superconductor (HTSC) thin film devices. We present first results on intrinsic stress in Ag and Au films measured during and after their UHV deposition onto YBa2Cu3O7−x thin film substrates. At 110 K film growth proceeds by columnar grain growth with tensile stresses as huge as the tensile strength of the bulk phase. At room temperature and up to 600 K the films grow via island growth developing much smaller film stress. At temperatures above 550 K a compressive stress contribution due to interdiffusion of oxygen from the HTSC substrates into the contact films is observed.

Notes: ONGC's Hazira Gas-Processing Complex (HGPC) consists of facilities for receiving natural gas along with associated condensate from an off-shore field at a rate of 20 MMN M3 per day. After separating the condensate, which is processed in condensate fractionation units, the gas is processed through various steps to recover LPG and to reduce its dew point to less than 5°C in order to make it suitable for transportation over long distances. The acid gas recovered during the gas-sweetening step is processed to obtain sulphur. The major products manufactured at HGPC therefore are lean sweet gas, LPG, NGL, and sulphur. The Oil and Natural Gas Commission awarded the assignment on Hazard Study and Risk Analysis of their Hazira Gas-Processing Complex (HGPC) to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in association with the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). The scope of this assignment covered a number of closely related and fully defined activities normally encountered in this type of work. Identification of hazards through the most appropriate methods, assigning frequency of occurrence of major unwanted incidents, quantification and assessment of probable damage to plant equipment, environment, human and animal life due to an unexpected event, and evaluation of various methods for reducing risk, together constituted the methodology for this assignment. Detailed recommendations aimed at reducing risk and enhancing reliability of plant and machinery were made. This article gives an overview of the assignment.

Notes: Two cases of formalin toxicity developed within 5 to 10 minutes of the placement of packs soaked in formalin within hepatic hydatid cysts. Hypotension, severe tachycardia, postoperative anuria, tachypnoea, restlessness, unconsciousness and coma developed. There was no response to the treatment given. Treatment was continued for about 12 hours. The problems associated with the use of formalin are discussed.

Notes: The structural genes (hupSL) of the membrane-bound NiFe-containing H2-uptake hydrogenase (Hup) of Azotobacter chroococcum were identified by oligo-nucleotide screening and sequenced. The small subunit gene (hupS) encodes a signal sequence of 34 amino acids followed by a 310-amino-acid, 34 156 D protein containing 12 cysteine residues. The large subunit gene (hupL) overlaps hupS by one base and codes for a predicted 601-amino-acid, 66433 D protein. There are two regions of strong homology with other Ni hydrogenases: a Cys-Thr-Cys-Cys-Ser motif near the N-terminus of HupS and an Asp-Pro-Cys-Leu-Ala-Cys motif near the carboxy-terminus of HupL. Strong overall homology exists between Azotobacter, Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Rhodobacter capsulatus Hup proteins but less exists between the Azotobacter proteins and hydrogenases from Desulfovibrio strains.Mutagenesis of either hupS or hupL genes of A. chrooooccum yielded Hup− phenotypes but some of these mutants retained a partial H2-evolving activity. Hybridization experiments at different stages of gene segregation confirmed the multicopy nature of the Azotobacter genome.

Notes: The continent of Antarctica consists of 14 million km2, roughly equivalent to the whole of South America, and is of immense interest to humanity, in particular to the countries of the Antarctic Treaty. The Antarctic continent is the continent of superlatives: it is almost isolated from the rest of the continents, and is severely cold, windy, and dry. In winter, the Antarctic area increases to nearly 32 million km2, because of formation of a 1,000km wide ice-belt. The average depth of ice on the continent is in the order of 2,000m, and in the transantarctic region this depth is 4,800 meters. Antarctica is the biggest sweet water reservoir of the planet earth. Icebergs are common and huge ones (190km in length and 130km wide) have also been observed. The minimum temperature recorded (–89.2°C) at Vostok (Russian base) on 21 July 1983 is also the minimum recorded environmental temperature on the planet earth. Because of extreme temperature variations the Antarctic winds have high velocity. The environment is very dry and at the center of the continent the dryness is of the same magnitude as in the driest desert anywhere on the planet. This is the only uninhabited continent of the planet, except for some 50 research bases which cover an insignificant area located on the continent and the Antarctica Peninsula. Because of its economic, strategic, geopolitical, scientific, meteorological, and oceanographic importance and possible exploitation in the future, Antarctica has been attracting greater attention every day. Antarctica is basically concentrated around the South Pole and it touches the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Brazil, in common with many other nations, has geopolitical interests and in untapped mineral deposits (considerable deposits of coal, petroleum, gas). In the south, where the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans meet, the cold water of Antarctica is the habitat housing hundreds of species of sea life. Unrestricted and unbalanced exploitation of Antarctica could cause changes in the meteorological and oceanographic balance. In the present paper, the Brazilian Antarctic Program, and summarized results of studies of Antarctic soil, rocks, and sediments are reported.
