Notes: [Auszug] The sampling position (New Zealand Oceano-graphic Institute Station J.344) was in approximately latitude 37 25 S. ; longitude 170 35 E. over the head of the New Caledonia Trough in a depth of some 1,900 m. The station was worked on February 14, 1957, under the direction of Dr. R. W. Burling ...

Notes: Summary The output of a small accelerometer buoy (diameter 12 cm), whose sensor axis was vertical when floating undisturbed, was recorded in the open ocean at four wind speeds ranging from 4.5 to 11.0 m/sec. Records are discussed assuming they represent the vertical component of the sea surface acceleration. Points read from the records had a nearly Gaussian distribution such that the probability of the acceleration exceeding g/2 was about 0.01. The variance of the acceleration was found to increase with wind speed at a rate comparable with that found for the mean square surface slope from other studies. Spectra of the four accelerometer records are compared with the equilibrium spectrum of Phillips. Some observations of the increase of whitecap density with increase in wind speed are described.

Notes: Abstract Results of muon polarization studies in xenon and argon up to 60 atm are reported. In argon for pressures up to 10 atm, the muon polarization is best explained by an epithermalcharge exchange model. Above this pressure, the decrease inP D and increase inP L are ascribed to charge neutralization and spin exchange reactions, respectively, in the radiolysis track. Measurements with Xe/He mixtures with a xenon pressure of 1 atm indicate that the lost polarization in the pure xenon at this pressure is due to inefficient moderation of the muon. As the pressure in pure xenon is increased above 10 atm, we find thatP L remains roughly constant andP D begins to increase. The lost fraction may be due to the formation of a XeMu Van der Waals type complex, whileP D is ascribed to XeMu+ formation. This suggests that spur processes appear to be less important in xenon than in argon.

Notes: Abstract We report the observation of the muonated ethyl radical in transverse magnetic fields. The radical is possibly formed by addition of epithermal Mu to ethylene. The pressure dependence of the line widths is discussed in terms of relaxation mechanisms of dipolar and spin-rotational origin.

Notes: Abstract The rate of reaction of muonium atoms with solutes of either charge is unaffected by the addition of a high concentration of an inert salt, therefore the “effective charge” on the muonium at the point of reaction is essentially zero.

Notes: Abstract The spin polarization of positive muons thermalized in Xe has been measured as a function of pressure up to 4660 Torr (6.1 atm) by the muon spin rotation (MSR) technique. At 4660 Torr, triplet muonium (F=1, M=1) accounts for about 40% of the initial muon polarization and no significant signal from diamagnetic muons has been observed. The unexpectedly slow recovery of the polarization in Xe at high pressures is discussed in conjunction with similar results seen in CCl4 and CHCl3 vapors.
