    Notes: Abstract Taylor's power law (y=am b) was used to analyze the spatial pattern ofBoophilus microplus (Canestrini) larvae in tropical pastures. The index of aggregationb was 2.75 and showed that larvae were highly aggregated. Theb-values differed significantly among certain pastures (LSD,P〈0.05), and pasture type and use could have contributed to differences inb. The use of Taylor's power law to adjust for sampling inconsistencies that occur in tropical pastures where regimented sampling cannot always be followed is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A survey of the occurrence ofOrnithodoros ticks in animal burrows was conducted in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Vacuum sampling techniques were used. Four of 8 sample sites in Haiti and 10 of 70 sample sites in the Dominican Republic were positive forO. puertoricensis Fox. Positive sample sites in Haiti were usually near swine. Sites in the Dominican Republic were in drier regions of the country and were not directly associated with previous swine locations. The determination thatO. puertoricensis, a potential vector and reservoir of African swine fever (ASF), is present in this region may pose a serious problem for eradication of ASF from the island of Hispaniola.

    Notes: Abstract A cooperative effort between the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services, the Agricultural Research Service, and the Department of Agriculture, Commonwealth Government of Puerto Rico has been successful in eardicatingAmblyomma variegatum (Fabricius) from the islands of Puerto Rico and Vieques (an island municipality of Puerto Rico). Application of acaricides to livestock and dogs at 14-day intervals for an 18-month period eliminated foci of tick infestation on 188 farms in four different locations without additional aerial or ground treatment. Reasons for the success and some of the costs associated with the eradication program on Puerto Rico are presented.

    Notes: Abstract Some vertebrate species in Guadeloupe are predators of free or parasitic stages ofAmblyomma variegatum (Fabricius). Among birds, 1.9% of the 421 identified animals found in the stomachs of grackles (Quiscalus lugubris), 1.6% of the 364 animals found in the stomachs of free-ranging chickens, and 0.3% of the 4642 animals found in the stomach of cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) wereA. variegatum ticks. The most efficient predator of ticks was the tropical fire ant,Solenopsis geminata, which was observed to only attack engorged stages of ticks. An average of 8% of the 564 individual ticks or batch of ticks released on the ground, mainly in a grass environment, were attacked by this ant species. Mice (Mus musculus) and mongooses (Herpestes auropunctatus) feed on engorged nymphs and female ticks. None of the 15 strains of entomophagous nematodes, generaSteinernema andHeterorhabditis, experimentally put in contact with engorged larvae and nymphs were able to parasitize them. In the laboratory, the insectsMegaselia scalaris (Diptera) andTineola sp. (Lepidoptera) were occasionally found to feed on engorged and unfed ticks, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract Field experiments were conducted in Guadeloupe to evaluate the attraction of different chemicals on a Guadeloupean strain of Amblyomma variegatum. Such tick sampling techniques may help to assess the size of the tick population on pastures before, during and after an attempted tick eradication campaign. CO2 was absolutely necessary to activate ticks, including the larvae. In addition to activation, our data suggested that CO2 itself is attractive for ticks. The reactivity of the ticks varied greatly with the period of the year, the adults being insensitive to CO2 alone or combined with pheromones for a period extending from December to June. For the whole period, the total captures were equal for the males and females, but the males were relatively more sensitive at the beginning of the season of activity (June–July), while the females dominated, but not significantly, for the rest of the period. There was also a gradient of reactivity depending on the distance from the trap; 28% of the ticks were captured at 0.5 m from the CO2 traps and 1.2% at a distance of 6 m. The ticks arrived rapidly at the trap. After 1 h of trapping, 55, 68 and 81% of the active nymphs, males and females, respectively, had reached the trap. Synthetic pheromones (methyl salicylate, o-nitrophenol and nonanoic acid in the proportions 1:2:8) or freshly detached males added to CO2, greatly increased the efficacy of the CO2 traps. Depending on the concentration of the pheromones, the attraction was four to 70 times higher than with CO2 alone. The effect depended on the sex of the ticks, males being attracted in a greater proportion by small amounts of pheromones, while the females were activated by higher doses. From a practical point of view, sampling should be conducted from June to December, with CO2 and high concentrations of pheromones, the traps being in operation for approximately 1 h at least, the area concerned by effluents being located downwind and covering an area of approximately 36 m2.
