    Notes: The energy spectrum of emitted electrons from a single barrier is analyzed taking into account the quantized levels of an accumulation layer. A self-consistent model is developed which solves Poisson's equation, the continuity equation, Schrödinger's equation, and the heat equation. The relationship between the population of the quantized levels, the energy relaxation time, and the tunneling probability is formulated. The energy spectrum consists of components from three- and two-dimensional electrons. A new emitter structure is proposed which effectively removes the three-dimensional current component providing a highly effective method of producing electrons with a very narrow energy spread in the direction of propagation.

    Notes: The temperature characteristics of 1.3 μm InGaAsP/InP buried heterojunction lasers are investigated using a fully self-consistent two dimensional numerical model. Devices operating at 1.3 μm are very temperature sensitive and therefore the model includes for the first time coupled solutions to the thermal as well as the electrical and optical equation sets. Good agreement is found with experimental results, including the temperature dependence of the threshold current and the prediction of a break-point temperature.

    Notes: Abstract Adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT) was characterized with respect to specific activity and immunoreactive protein (CRM) levels in hemolysate from 18 members of an APRT-deficient kindred. In addition, lymphoblastoid cell lines were established from six of these subjects and APRT from these cells was characterized in a similar fashion. Levels of specific activity and CRM in patients homozygous for the deficiency were less than 1% of normal. Heterozygous subjects had higher levels of activity and CRM in lymphoblasts than in erythrocytes and, in all cases, the APRT present was normal in terms of isoelectric point, subunit molecular weight, and heat stability. The higher levels of activity and CRM found in lymphoblasts may be due either to expression of a mutant gene product stabilized in a normal:mutant dimer or to autologous regulation.
