Notes: The rational conformal field theory extensions of W1+∞ at c=1 are in one-to-one correspondence with one-dimensional integral lattices L(m). Each extension is associated with a pair of oppositely charged "vertex operators" of charge square m∈N. Their product defines a bilocal field Vm(z1,z2) whose expansion in powers of z12=z1−z2 gives rise to a series of (neutral) local quasiprimary fields Vl(z,m) (of dimension l+1). The associated bilocal exponential of a normalized current generates the W1+∞ algebra spanned by the Vl(z,1) (and the unit operator). The extension of this construction to higher (integer) values of the central charge c is also considered. Applications to a quantum Hall system require computing characters (i.e., chiral partition functions) depending not just on the modular parameter τ, but also on a chemical potential ζ. We compute such a ζ dependence of orbifold characters, thus extending the range of applications of a recent study of affine orbifolds. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract For each type of discotinuity the magneto-hydrodynamic relationships are reduced to a set of necessary relations between the parameters at both sides of the shock. The relations which do not contain the pressure are used in the method proposed. The distance in the space of the parameters between the point corresponding to the experimental data and the nearest point exactly satisfying the relations is obtained for each case. Supposition is made that the shortest distance conforms to the most probable type of discontinuity. As an illustration of the proposed method several events of discontinuities experimentally registered in the interplanetary space are considered.

Notes: [Auszug] In 1973 Sanduleak and Stephenson1 observed strong blue-shifted absorption and variable emission lines, and TiO bands in the visible and infrared regions of objective-prism spectra of MWC560, and assigned it a spectral type of M4ep. Notes: Abstract: The wave functions of the Haldane–Rezayi paired Hall state have been previously described by a non-unitary conformal field theory with central charge c=−2. Moreover, a relation with the c=1 unitary Weyl fermion has been suggested. We construct the complete unitary theory and show that it consistently describes the edge excitations of the Haldane–Rezayi state. Actually, we show that the unitary (c=1) and non-unitary (c=−2) theories are related by a local map between the two sets of fields and by a suitable change of conjugation. The unitary theory of the Haldane–Rezayi state is found to be the same as that of the 331 paired Hall state. Furthermore, the analysis of modular invariant partition functions shows that no alternative unitary descriptions are possible for the Haldane–Rezayi state within the class of rational conformal field theories with abelian current algebra. Finally, the known c= 3/2 conformal theory of the Pfaffian state is also obtained from the 331 theory by a reduction of degrees of freedom which can be physically realized in the double-layer Hall systems.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated how the latitude dependence of the solar wind velocity (SWV) influenced the cosmic-ray (CR) modulation and distribution in the heliosphere. The dependence proposed by Fry and Akasofu (1987) is used:v SW=v O+v 1(1-cos n λ m , where the SWV,v SW is a function of the heliomagnetic latitude λ m andv 0 andv 1 are constants. An estimation of the diffusion and drift terms in the transport equation is made, which shows that towards the poles the effects of the drift transfer decrease, while the diffusion terms in the equation increase due to the change of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) geometry. The numerical solutions of the two-dimensional (2-D) transport equation show that when the SWV changes with latitude: (1) The CR intensities away from the neutral sheet are larger for both IMF polarity periods in comparison with the case when the SWV does not change with the latitude. (2) The latitude gradients are negative during negative magnetic polarity periods. (3) The Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 long-time observations showing greater galactic CR intensities nearer the Sun at greater distances, could be explained by the proposed model.
