Conclusions Calculations have been made on the heat loads due to the arcs, which show that there are zones in which the irradiation is much higher than elsewhere. The vertical extent of these zones is 0.2–0.35 of the height from the threshold level, while the variation around the perimeter is smoother, but there is an angle whose bisector passes through the axis of the furnace and the electrode and constituting 20–25° within which the heat flux from the arcs is largest. Such parts of the lining should be replaced by cooled panels. The calculations also show that about 40% of the radiation power reaching the lining from the arcs is concentrated in an annular belt (0.2 –0.3) Hf high reckoned from the threshold level.
