    Notes: Several ideas of color encoding for surface slope measurements are systematically explored and reviewed to develop a new set of fundamental concepts. It is shown that different systems, such as shadowgraphs, Schlieren optics, and our water surface gradient detectors, can also be universally described through the concepts of sun glitter functions, incident light-source encoding, and observer encoding. These concepts provide a more precise way of mathematically formulating and physically interpreting the flow visualization images, thereby providing quantitative results. It is this new system of concepts that uncover the quantitative potential of these optical methods. The measurement abilities of various existing optical systems are thus enhanced from qualitative observation or visualization to the well-defined quantitative measurement. This is a critical step forward. The concepts can also be further extended to measure fluid flows with multiple density layers or flows with continuous density variations. As an example of implementation, the method of measuring a water-surface gradient is extended into a reflective approach of detecting small changes of surface slope at an air–water interface. In this process, fluid surface slopes (surface gradients) are first optically mapped into color space. An array of lenses is used to transform the rays of an optical light source into a series of colored parallel light beams by passing the light through a group of two-dimensional color palettes at the focal planes of the lens array. This system of parallel light beams is used to illuminate a free surface of water. The reflected rays from the free surface are captured by a charge-coupled device color camera located above the surface. The slopes are derived from the color images after the calibration, and surface elevations are obtained by integrating the slopes. This technique is then applied to observe free-surface deformations caused by near-surface turbulence interacting with the free surface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The wake three-dimensionality caused by a local discontinuity in cylinder diameter (a stepped cylinder) was studied. Changes in vortex shedding frequency caused by the discontinuity took place in either a direct or an indirect mode, depending on the diameter ratio and the Reynolds number. The roles of oblique shedding and frequency modulation of vortex shedding were studied. The physical change in vortex shedding frequency occurred differently for each mode. A wavelet analysis is used to explore frequency modulations in the wake. The relationship between vortex linkages, frequency changes, secondary instability, and these two modes is discussed.

    Notes: Slanted vortex shedding dominates the wake of circular cylinders of finite aspect ratio in the Reynolds number range of 72–158. Parallel vortex shedding can be induced in the wake of a circular cylinder by imposing a symmetric pressure boundary condition at the two ends of the cylinder. This condition can be achieved by positioning two upstream circular cylinders of larger diameter normal to it. The resulting Strouhal–Reynolds number curve shows no discontinuity. Also, the turbulent transition in the wake of a circular cylinder could be delayed by using this technique.

    Notes: Preliminary results are reported for an experiment studying the dynamics of laminar magnetic vortex rings. These are formed through injection of a magnetic fluid (ferrofluid) into a nonmagnetic carrier liquid. An external magnetic field is used to strain the magnetic cores of the propagating rings without an additional external flow and away from solid boundaries. Varying field-dependent growth rates and the development of field-induced instabilities can be observed. Results are presented from an automated analysis of digitally recorded video sequences, resulting in time records of the evolving ring radii.

    Notes: The effect of cross-shear on a nominally two-dimensional plane mixing layer is investigated. A temporal mixing layer is generated with a stratified tilting tank similar to that used by Thorpe [J. Fluid Mech. 32, 693 (1968)], and cross-shear is introduced to this mixing layer to simulate situations the authors believe are widespread in industrial and natural flows. A new type of "co-rotating'' streamwise vortices arises from the introduction of cross-shear, and the mixing rate is found to be greatly enhanced.

    Notes: Sorption of dissolved Fe2+ on bentonite was studied using a batch technique. The distribution coefficient, Kd, was evaluated for a bentonite-iron system as a function of contact time, pH, sorbent and sorbate concentrations, and temperature. Sorption results were interpreted in terms of Freundlich's and Langmuir's equations. Thermodynamic parameters for the sorption system were determined at three temperatures: 298°, 308°, and 318°K. The values of ΔH°(-4.0 kjmol−1) and ΔG°(-2.46 Kjmol−1) at 298°K (25°C) suggest that sorption of iron on bentonite is an exothermic and a spontaneous process. The ΔG° value became less negative at higher temperatures and, therefore, less iron was sorbed at higher temperatures. The desorption studies with 0.01M CaCl2 and deionized water at iron loading on bentonite showed that more than 90 wt% of the iron is irreversibly sorbed, probably due to the fixation of the iron by isomorphous replacement in the crystal lattice of the sorbent.

    Notes: Abstract Eighty-nine kidneys of 81 infants and children with uretero-pelvic junction obstruction were investigated using ultrasonography (US), diuretic urography (DUR) and diuretic renography (DREN). Results of the US were false-negative in 14%. This can be avoided by ensuring that the patients get an amount of fluid appropriate to their age before the examination or by performing diuretic ultrasonography with frusemide. False-positive results were found with US in 15%, but obstruction was excluded by using the DUR and/or the DREN. During post-operative follow up the DUS is useful and after 6 months the clearance with 123-iodine hippurate combined with the DREN should be performed. The performance of the Whitaker-test is unnecessary.
