    Notes: We study the classical electromagnetic enhancement at the excitation wavelength related to surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) experimental configurations in the vicinity of random rough metal surfaces possessing self-affine scaling behavior. The scattered electromagnetic intensity is obtained by means of numerical calculations based on the rigorous integral equations formulation of the electromagnetic wave scattering, free from the limitations of electrostatic and/or dipolar approximations. From the enhancement of the scattered field intensity in the immediate vicinity of the surface, originated in the excitation of transversal-magnetic surface plasmon polaritons, the SERS electromagnetic mechanism on substrates of Ag, Au, and Cu is explored as a function of the surface fractal dimension, rms height, and excitation wavelength. It is found that fractality favors the occurrence of large electromagnetic enhancements, which in turn appear to be maximum at an optimum wavelength as a result of the compromise between roughness-induced light coupling into surface plasmons and absorptive losses. This optimum wavelength is shorter for Ag than for Au and Cu. Maximum local enhancements on the order of 103 are encountered for the three metals being considered. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We study the near-field and the angular distribution of radiation resulting from the scattering of surface plasmon polaritons from a surface defect by means of numerical calculations based on the use of the impedance boundary condition. Maximum reflection (plasmon mirrors) is found for half widths on the order of the inverse of the surface plasmon wavevector, either protuberances or indentations, as predicted by a perturbation-theoretic argument. Maximum radiation (light emitters) occurs for wider protuberances, with coupling efficiencies beyond 80%. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The mobilization of plasmids from gram-negative Escherichia coli to gram-positive Brevibacterium lactofermentum, mediated by P-type transfer functions, was used to construct disrupted mutants blocked specifically in the homoserine branch of the aspartate pathway. The mutant strain B. lactofermentum R31 showed an efficiency of conjugal transfer two to three orders of magnitude higher than that of the wild-type strain B.␣lactofermentum ATCC 13869. The hom- and thrB- disrupted mutants of B. lactofermentum ATCC 13869 were lysine overproducers. B. lactofermentum R31 mutants do not overproduce lysine because R31 is an alanine-overproducing strain and channels the pyruvate needed for lysine biosynthesis to the production of alanine.

    Notes: Abstract We discuss recent results of radius to frequency mapping of pulsars. This method shows that for 43 pulsars the radio emission originates near the polar cap for millisecond pulsars and a few hundred km away for longer period pulsars. If the magnetospheres of these object contain dipolar magnetic fields, the corresponding magnetic field strength in the emission region is about 107 gauss, for all pulsars in the sample. We investigate possible physical reasons for the location of the radio emission.

    Notes: Abstract The ftsZ gene was cloned from the chromosomal DNA of Brevibacterium lactofermentum by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using two oligonucleotides designed from two conserved regions found in most of the previously cloned and sequenced ftsZ genes from other microorganisms. ftsZ is a single-copy gene in corynebacteria and is located downstream from ftsQ and murC, indicating linkage between genes involved in peptidoglycan synthesis (mur genes) and genes involved in cell division (fts genes). The organisation of the cluster is similar to that in Streptomyces and different from those of Escherichia coli or Bacillus subtilis because ftsA is not located upstream of ftsZ. The gene was expressed in E. coli using the T7 expression system; the calculated molecular weight of the expressed protein was 50 kDa. Expression of the B. lactofermentum ftsZ gene in E. coli inhibited cell division and led to filamentation. The ftsZ gene of this organism does not complement ftsZ mutations or deletions in E. coli, when cloned on low or high-copy-number vectors.

    Notes: Summary The determination of sulphide, cysteine and thiol-containing drugs by high-speed FIA titrations with chemiluminescent detection is described. Two different redox processes, the reduction of hypochlorite by sulphide or thiol-containing drugs and the oxidation of luminol by hypochlorite, were coupled in the same FIA assembly. Procedures were applied to the determination of cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, N-penicillamine, 2-mercaptopropionyl-glycine and thiouracil in pharmaceuticals.
