Notes: Abstract In this paper we develop a mathematical model for the analysis of the dynamic response of a bridge structure as it interacts with moving vehicles. The vehicles are modeled both for fixed axle distances (e.g. Cooper Loadings) and for variable axle distances (e.g. multi-vehicles). We then generate an algorithm to solve the resulting equations of motion. Results obtained using our theoretical model are shown to compare very well with measured field data.

Notes: Summary Data are presented on the breeding behavior of two zebra species to test whether intra- and interspecific variation in male reproductive behavior and physiology are correlated with differences in female promiscuity. In one species, plains zebra (Equus burchelli) females live in closed membership single male groups and mate monandrously. In the other species, the Grevy's zebra (E. grevyi) females live in groups whose membership is much more temporary. Typically, associations with individual males are brief and mating is polyandrous. However, some females - those having just given birth — reside with one male for long periods, mating monandrously. These differences in female mating behavior generate variability in the potential for sperm competition. We show that behavioral differences in male investment in reproductive activities correlate with the potential for sperm competition. When mating with promiscuous mares, Grevy's zebra stallions made a greater investment in reproductive behavior (calling, mounting, ejaculations) than did stallions of either species when mating with monandrous females. The evolution of large testes size in the Grevy's zebra, when compared to the congeneric plains zebra, horse, and mountain zebra, allows for this increased investment.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. Intact epididymal adipose tissue incorporates carbon 14 of fructose1-C14 to an extent of 97% into the first carbon atom of the glucose constituents of glycogen. 2. Fructose-1-phosphate is converted neither to glucose-6-phosphate nor to trioses by adipose tissue homogenate. 3. The affinity of adipose tissue hexokinase for glucose (Km=2.44 × 10−4 m) largely exceeds that for fructose (Km=9.02 × 10−3 m) and 3,5-dinitrobenzoylglucosamine inhibits phosphorylation of fructose more markedly than that of glucose. 4. The conclusion is reached that the entry of glucose and fructose into the adipose tissue cell, which proceed by different transport mechanisms is rate limiting for the metabolism of these hexoses rather than phosphorylation by hexokinase.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.
