Notes:
With the aid of the isotope-dilution method we were able to show that both, man and dog, cannot oxidize oleic acid on the double bond with formation of azelaic acid. Healthy subjects excreted the deuterio azelaic acid with unchanged isotope concentration which would not be the case if this dicarboxylic acid was an intermediate product. Also oleyl alcohol, even as acetic acid - or benzoic acid ester, when fed to dogs, will not be metabolized to azelaic acid, but much easier oxidized to fatty acid.
