    Notes: A single-electron memory was fabricated using the improved pulse-mode atomic force microscopy nano oxidation process which oxidized the surface of the thin titanium (Ti) metal on the atomically flat α-alumina (α-Al2O3) substrate and formed the narrow oxidized titanium (TiOx) line that works as a tunnel junction for the device. This single-electron memory consists of the multitunnel junction and a memory capacitance. The single-electron transistor, which works as an electrometer, was connected to the memory node of the single-electron memory to detect the potential change of the memory node by the injection of the individual electrons. The fabricated single-electron memory showed the hysteresis loop even at room temperature by the return trip of the memory bias when starting from 0 to 10 V and again coming back to 0 V. About 25 electrons were stored at the memory node. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A carbon-nanotube field emitter which has single-wall carbon nanotubes with a diameter of 1–2 nm grown directly onto the Si tips by thermal chemical vapor deposition was developed. Owing to the 10–20 times smaller diameter of the nanotube than the conventional silicon (Si) tip, the fabricated carbon-nanotube field emitter showed an ultralow threshold voltage of 10 V for the field emission of electrons, which is more than ten times smaller value than the conventional Si emitter. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Soluble polystyrenes with crown ether structures and hydroxyl groups adjacent to the macrorings were prepared by the reaction of epoxide-containing polystyrenes with monoaza-15-crown-5 or monoaza-18-crown-6. Rate of formation of the polymer-bound alkali cation-crown alkoxide ion pair from the soluble polystyrenes and aqueous NaOH or KOH depended on the loading of crown ether and hydroxyl units and on the size of the macroring. The elimination of HCl from less reactive 2-chloroethylbenzene with aqueous NaOH or KOH in the presence of the soluble polystyrene catalysts under two-phase conditions was limited mainly by the intrinsic reaction rate. The elimination of HBr from more reactive 2-bromoethylbenzene in the presence of the less (11%) ring-substituted polymer catalyst with 18-crown unit was limited by the alkoxide formation rate. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
