    Notes: 1. Interactions between environmental variables and 0+ fish assemblages in the upper River Garonne (France) were quantified during late August 1995.2. The abundance and diversity of the fish assemblages in floodplain channels were modelled using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) analysis and nine variables: the abundance of the six dominant species, fish specific richness, overall abundance of 0+ fish and the Shannon index of diversity. Multiple regression analysis was also used to assess ANN performance.3. Using 596 samples, correlation coefficients (r adjusted) between observed and estimated values of the nine dependent parameters were all highly significant (P 〈 0.01). Expected values from the tested data were significantly related to the observed values. The correlation coefficient between observed and estimated values (r) varied from 0.70 to 0.85.4. The ANN provided a high quality prediction, despite the complex nature of the relationship between microhabitat composition and fish abundance.5. Garson’s algorithm was used to provide the explanatory power needed in ecology when using black-box models. Parameters contained in the models (i.e. weighting) were used to determine the relative contributions of explanatory variables and thus to ascertain the structure of fish communities.

    Notes: The spawning behaviour of male nest guarding sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus, a recent invasive species in southern England, was studied and quantified for the first time. In the absence of physical differences between territorial and non-territorial males (i.e. colour, size, etc.), the reproductive behaviour of territorial males was analysed and related to reproductive success. The results showed that females preferred high-courting and highly aggressive males. The initial cue in female mate choice, however, was based on courtship, while aggression was the decisive behavioural trait in influencing mate choice, providing a direct signal of physical condition and ‘paternal competence’. Some males picked nest sites which were subsequently preferred by other males taking over the nest of a previous male (‘communal nest’), with the new territorial male adopting the eggs already present at the nest. It appears that either due to female preference for nests already containing eggs or lower rates of sired egg predation by dilution among unrelated eggs, sunbleak males have adopted the mating strategy of allopaternal care.

    Notes: Pseudorasbora parva has demonstrated, in less than four decades, its invasive potential by colonizing much of continental Europe. Established populations of P. parva have now been found in the wild, in large numbers, at several locations across England. At present, only one deliberate introduction is known to have taken place during the mid-1980s at Crampmoor Fisheries, Hampshire.

    Notes: The influence of early life development on the swimming performance of the endangered sofie Chondrostoma toxostoma was examined to highlight trends in organism-environment relationships. Sudden occurrences of change in integrated function were found and these were most decisive, in particular with respect to microhabitat use, between the larval and juvenile periods of development. Stabilization of relative growth, i.e. end of the remodelling process (metamorphosis), occurred well after all larval characteristics (remnants of finfold and rapid allometric growth) had disappeared and all juvenile structures had appeared (nasal septa and complete scale cover). The fact that stabilization of relative growth coincided with dramatic shifts in microhabitat use (organism needs) as well as in swimming capacity (organism skills) suggests a more ‘decisive’ type of change in organism-to-environment interaction than one purely of form, i.e. shift from nursery to adult habitat.

    Notes: Using the non-native sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus as a model, the relationship between ontogeny and ecology was studied with a view to identifying specific morphological and physiological processes involved in influencing ecological niche shifts. Following a predefined saltatory model for the early ontogeny of sunbleak, field studies examined the temporal use of microhabitat, diet and morphological changes throughout early development. Following a dramatic shift in both morphology and ecology between the free embryo phase and the larval period, habitat use and diet showed little change during the larval period, with habitat use confined to marginal, vegetated areas and prey items associated with these habitats well represented in the diet. During the final larval step (L5), transition to the juvenile period resulted in the stabilization of relative growth, acquisition of the adult morphotype and was associated with a clear shift in diet and habitat use. During this period, sunbleak moved for the first time into open, deeper water, away from the banks, and utilized a similar range of food items to the adults. Specific relationships between form and function are further discussed.

    Notes: Since its first introduction to English waters in the mid 1980s, sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus has spread widely and it is shown in the present study that this non-native cyprinid is a new host for Neoergasilus japonicus. This copepod parasite from South East Asia has a limited host range and distribution in the U.K. Rapid dispersal of sunbleak in the U.K. raises concerns for further dispersal of this introduced parasite.

    Notes: The early development of sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus, from activation of ovum to juvenile, was recorded using both living and preserved materials. Five embryonic steps, one free embryo and five larval steps were identified. Hatching occurred between 73 h 25 min and 85 h 25 min (post-activation); the free embryo period was extremely short in duration (3–16 h). The transition from larva to juvenile occurred in c. 96 days when the fish were fully scaled and the lateral line organ clearly visible. During early development, developmental thresholds were identified between steps, which suggested possible switches in ecology, microhabitat, behaviour, performance or any combination of these. During both embryo and larva periods of development, steps increased in time duration, indicating different rates of complexity of physiological and morphological developments within each step. From the results, a ‘step like’ model is proposed for the early development of sunbleak.

    Notes: We examine the evolving concept of what constitutes a non-native (or alien) freshwater fish. In an attempt to distinguish between biogeographical and socio-political perspectives, we review the patterns in the introduction and dispersal of non-native fishes in Europe and North America, and especially the recent expansion of Ponto-Caspian gobies in Europe. We assess patterns in the development of national policy and legislation in response to the perceived threat of non-native fish introductions to native species and ecosystems. We review, and provide a glossary of, the terms and definitions associated with non-native species. Finally, we discuss perspectives as regards the future treatment of naturalized species.
