Abstract A laser shadow technique for the investigation of turbulent flow is introduced. While only qualitative information can be obtained from conventional shadowgraphy, this novel technique possesses the capability of providing quantitative results. In particular, it is demonstrated by theoretical reasoning and experimental examples that the mean velocity and the turbulence level can be determined. Only simple two-dimensional flow fields are considered in this work in order to focus on the basic principles of the method.
