    Notes: We discuss two approaches to obtain neutron detectors of very high temporal resolution. In the first approach, a uranium-coated cathode is used in a streak tube configuration. Secondary electrons accompanying the fission fragments from a neutron-uranium reaction are accelerated, focused through a pinhole, and streaked. Calculations show that 20-ps time resolution can be obtained. In the second approach, a uranium-coated cathode is integrated into a transmission line. State-of-the-art technology indicates that a time resolution of 20 ps can be obtained by gating the cathode with a fast electric pulse.

    Notes: A disorder of unknown aetiology appearing as silvering on squash (Cucurbita pepo) leaves has become prevalent in south Florida. Typical symptoms, observed after 2 weeks of exposure to adults of Bemisia tabaci, the sweet potato whitefly (SPWF) include vein clearing followed by silvering of whole leaves. Fruits from affected plants are blanched or streaked longitudinally. The silverleaf syndrome was not mechanically transmissible when crude extracts of symptomatic leaves were used as inoculum. Two sizes of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) of c. 4.6 and 4.2 kilobase pairs (kbp) were consistently observed in leaf extracts of caged, whitefly-infested, symptomatic plants. In contrast, caged plants not exposed to whiteflies showed no symptoms and contained no detectable dsRN A. In addition, squash plants exposed to SPWF colonies from California neither developed silverleaf symptoms nor contained any dsRNA. Double-stranded RNA could also be readily detected in whitefly-infested yellow summer squash and zucchini from the field. However, asymptomatic eggplant and watermelon infested with SPWF from nearby fields did not contain detectable dsRNA. Dot-spot hybridization assays using an RNA-specific probe detected homologous sequences in both adults and nymphs of SPWF that induced silverleaf symptoms but not in adults and nymphs of SPWF that could not induce silverleaf symptoms. These results, along with the non-endogenous nature of the detected dsRNA suggest that the dsRNA is or is associated with the causal agent of whitefly-mediated leaf silvering in squash.

    Notes: Abstract Although high soil temperatures can occur in apple orchards throughout the world, there is little information on their effect. This investigation was conducted to determine the influence of various durations of root exposure to 34 °C on the growth and physiology of the apple plant. Roots of Royal Gala and McIntosh cultivars were exposed to 34 °C for 0, 8, 16, and 24 hours/day for seven weeks. Royal Gala grown at the 24 hours/day treatment exhibited significant decreases in leaf, shoot, and root growth; chlorophyll concentration of the older leaves; transpiration; discrimination against13C in leaves; and an increase in leaf temperature. In McIntosh, root growth and chlorophyll concentration of leaves were not affected. For both cultivars compared to the control treatment, the continuous high temperature treatment resulted in lower levels of P, Mg, and Mn in leaves. Royal Gala at this treatment showed significantly higher values of foliar N and K and lower values of Ca, Fe, and Zn. For McIntosh the levels of Cu and B decreased significantly in this treatment as compared to the control treatment. We conclude that 34 °C in the root-zone does not stress these cultivars unless it persists throughout the day/night cycle.

    Notes: Abstract The diffractive dissociation of pions into 3π and 5π final states has been studied using π− d interactions at 15 GeV/c. Peripherally produced low-mass enhancements are observed in both channels. the 3π enhancements consist predominantly of two-body final states, ϱπ, andfπ; evidence for agπ enhancement is inconclusive. The 5π channel shows no strong two-body structure. A multiperipheral Deck model and the statistical dissociation model are studied as possible mechanisms for these enhandements. The multiperipheral model describes the 3π channel well, whereas the less structured statistical model gives a better description of the 5π data.
