Abstract The relationship between organizational structure and effectiveness was examined in 33 psychiatry departments in general hospitals in Texas. Data were collected on 23 measures of organizational structure and 2 indices of effectiveness. The effectiveness measures were predesigned by the researchers and submitted to a nationwide panel of mental health experts to determine their practicality. The results of the study indicated that role specialization, centralization, standardization, and mode of conflict resolution were the most important predictors of effectiveness. Implications for administration of mental health services are discussed.
