Summary Reactions of sulfonation, sulfone formation, oxidation, and condensation take place during the action of sulfuric acid or oleum on oil. In the oxidation of the oils, burning off of side-chain alkyl and cycloalkyl substituents takes place, with formation of carboxyl groups and phenolic hydroxyl groups in the structure of the sulfonation product, and with liberation of carbon dioxide and water of reaction, as well as oxidiative dehydrogenation of naphthenic rings to aromatic ones and oxidative condensation of oil sulfonation products. The oil sulfonation product possesses ion exchange properties and may be used as an ion exchange material.
