Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Kristallstruktur von Papagoit, CaCuAlSi2O6(OH)3, monoklina = 12,926 (3),b = 11.496 (3),c = 4.696 (1) Å, β = 100.81 (2)°,V = 685.4 (3) Å3, RaumgruppeC2/m,Z = 4, wurde für 913 beobachtete, MoKα-Röntgenstrahlung gemessene Reflexe aufR = 3,4% verfeinert.
Notes: Summary The crystal structure of papagoite, CaCuAlSi2O6(OH)3, monoclinic,a = 2.926 (3),b = 11.496 (3),c = 4.696 (1) Å, β = 100.81 (2)°, V = 685.4 (3) Å3, space groupC 2/m,Z = 4, has been refined to anR index of 3.4% for 913 observed reflections measured with MoKα X-radiation. The single unique Cu cation is surrounded by six anions in a pseudo-octahedral arrangement showing strong Jahn-Teller distortion. Edge-sharing “rutile-like” chains of pseudo-octahedrally coordinated Cu and Al extend in the Y direction, and are cross-linked into an octahedral sheet by Ca2Ø10 (O = unspecified ligand, O or OH) dimers. These sheets are linked by (Si4O12) rings to form a mixed tetrahedral-octahedral framework.

Notes: Abstract  Oxidation of a flotation-derived, low-sulfide tailings containing approximately 0.4 wt.% S was compared with simultaneously oxidized tailings containing 1.0 wt.% S and 2.5 wt.% S to assess their acid generating characteristics. Each tailings type was exposed to oxidation for three years in laboratory columns and in lysimeter pits in the field. In these tailings the sulfide mineral of principal concern with respect to acid generation is pyrrhotite (Fe 1-x S). In past studies the alteration of pyrrhotite has been characterized by initial replacement with marcasite (FeS2) and ferric iron sulfates, which are followed by development of ferric oxyhydroxides such as goethite and lepidocrocite. Macroscopic characterization of the tailings shows varying and progressive degrees of oxidation correlative with the three different sulfur contents. As expected, the tailings with the lowest sulfur content are the least oxidized, and those with the highest sulfur content have reacted the most. The column tests, which represent accelerated reaction conditions relative to those for the lysimeter pits, show much higher degrees of oxidation, and a markedly more distinct boundary between the oxidized and unoxidized zones; as well, differences among the three tailings types are more pronounced.

Notes: Abstract Powder infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques on single crystals were used to study the thermal behaviour of malayaite, CaSnSiO5. Infrared spectra show a discontinuity in the temperature evolution of phonon frequencies and absorbance near 500 K. However, crystal structure data collected at 300, 450, 550, 670, and 750 K show no evidence of a symmetry-breaking phase transition and no split positions. The most obvious change with heating is a tumbling motion of the SnO6 octahedra and an increase of the anisotropic displacement factors of Ca. The thermal evolution of the mean-square vibrational amplitude of the Ca atom shows a pronounced change in slope near 500 K. The evidence suggests that the 500 K anomaly in malayaite is more similar in character to the 825 K (β-γ) transition as opposed to the 496 K (α-β) transition in synthetic titanite.
