Notes: Tidal deformations of the solid earth show remarkable regional fluctuations. Mean gravity anomalies reveal strong positive correlation with the regional variations in the vertical tide component, if the effect of topography on the gravity field is reduced by isostatic proceedings. The correlation of these “tidal anomalies” with the lower harmonics of the gravity field is weaker. Heterogenities of the upper mantle may be a source of these differences in the deformations.

Notes: Gravity surveys in western Texas with station spacing of about 400 m were complemented by carefully observed vertical gradients of gravity making use of specially designed and automated instrumentation. The presented areal surveys of 51 and 52 stations taken in relatively flat terrain are parts of a large survey of close to 1000 stations complemented by an equal number of vertical gradient measurements. Quite irregular anomalous vertical gravity gradients surpassing 10 microgal/m were often encountered. Assuming the causative density contrasts to be located not more than 10 m below ground surface then free air correction errors of ± 0.1 mgal and more must be accepted. From a practical point of view there seems to be no other way to control such unpredictable errors than to carefully observe the local variation of vertical gravity gradients with adequate equipment. Making use of very closely spaced gravity measurements to derive these anomalous features seems more costly and cumbersome.

Notes: Summary The domain of the possible values of the mantle's anelasticity parameters and Love numbers based on modern VLBI-data is found. A new method of the joint analysis of VLBI- and tidal data is suggested, which gives possibility to obtain better estimations of the Q-factor of the free core nutation.

Notes: Abstract. As shown in previous work, dynamical effects of a realistic model of a heterogeneous, compressible, stably stratified liquid core may be obtained by means of a simple analysis of the generalized two-dimensional Laplace tidal equation which describes tidal flows of an incompressible and non-gravitating fluid in a thin spherical layer with mobile boundaries. The solution was presented in the form of expansions in powers of a small parameter κ being the ratio of nutational motion frequency in space to the frequency of the Earth's diurnal rotation. Whereas in an earlier paper only first-order terms were taken into account, our present approach includes not only main second-order terms in the spherical harmonic expansions of the solutions, but also the terms of higher orders. These effects are calculated numerically for realistic models of the Earth's outer liquid core, solid inner core and anelastic mantle (PREM model). Notes: Summary "Pathological oscillations" of rotating fluids occur when the period of oscillations with respect to a mobile reference frame exceeds half of a rotational period. The oscillations of such kind play an important role in the theory of nutation of a real Earth model with compressible, heterogeneous outer liquid core and solid inner core. In this paper we try to present a sufficiently rigorous description of such oscillations. The full system of two-dimensional solutions is found numerically. Results are presented in form of infinite matrices which connect the coefficients of spherical harmonic expansions of the boundary conditions, pressure, and horizontal components of tidal velocities. The substitution of these known solutions in the three-dimensional equations of motion results in an infinite set of ordinary differential equations which describe the conditions of equilibrium in the radial direction. Below we analize"pathological" oscillations of different kind which are described by this set of equations.
