Notes: In the present study, double fluorescence staining combined with confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis were used to examine the effects of melatonin on ischemia-induced neuronal DNA strand breaks and its possible mechanisms in a transient middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion model. Results showed that melatonin dose-dependently reduced infarct areas and decreased both DNA double and single strand breaks (DSB and SSB) and enhanced cell viability in the peri-ischemic brain regions. Furthermore, Bcl-2 induction in the ischemic brain was further enhanced by melatonin treatment. Double staining analysis indicated that the cells costained for Bcl-2 and TdT-mediated–deoxyuridine triphosphate (dUTP) nick-end labeling (TUNEL), a DSB marker, displayed a relative regular morphology compared with the cells only stained with TUNEL. Transient ischemia induced an expression of excision repair cross-complementing factor 6 (ERCC6) mRNA, a gene essential for the preferential repair of nuclear excision repair, in the injured neurons. Double labeling showed that ERCC6 only co-localized with proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), a member of the nuclear excision repair complex, but not with TUNEL. Melatonin further and statistical significantly up-regulated ERCC6 mRNA expression in the peri-ischemic region of rat brains. The results suggest that neuroprotection by melatonin against ischemic injury may be related to modulation of apoptosis and DNA repair capacity.

Notes: The classical formalism for studying diffraction from helical structures extended to include ligand binding is presented. The diffraction from such a binding pattern is the convolution of the Fourier transforms of the helix and the one-dimensional binding distribution. It is shown in the present analysis that it is not necessary to assume that the binding distribution is strictly periodic, as long as its Fourier transform can be determined. Analysis of the convolution gives a general expression for the diffracted intensities and the selection rule for the layer-lines. It shows two groups of layer-lines: one group is the familiar layer-line set from the original helix, while the other group shows reciprocal spacings shifted by 1/a from the original helix layer-lines, where a is the average repeat of the binding distribution. This group of layer-lines is contributed by the ligand only. By way of examples, calculated diffraction patterns from muscle actin filaments with bound myosin heads in three different binding patterns are presented. This approach provides a method for determining the ligand-binding distribution along helices by an analysis of their X-ray diffraction patterns.

Notes: This paper reports synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles by three precipitationmethods. Homogeneous aqueous solution of Ca(NO3)2 and H3PO4 was used as precursor solution, and NH3•H2O was precipitator. Calcium deficient hydroxyapatite nanorods were obtained byadding the precipitator into precursor solution, near stoichiometric hydroxyapatite nanoparticleswere derived from adding precursor solution into the precipitator, and smaller hydroxyapatitenanoparticles were prepared by adding precipitator and precursor solution simultaneously into areaction vessel. The stoichiometry of hydroxyapatite was mainly affected by pH at precipitationreaction process. The crystal size and shape of hydroxyapatite particles was related to Ostwaldripening. The stoichiometry and morphology of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles can be controllable byselecting suitable coprecipitation process

Notes: Microstructure and mechanical properties of three kinds of Mg-Gd-Sm-Zr alloys havebeen analyzed in this paper. Results exhibit that the microstructure of as-cast Mg-Gd-Sm-Zr alloycontains α-Mg and eutectic compounds which are mainly comprised of most Mg5Gd-base phases anda few Mg41Sm5-base phases by EDX and XRD analysis. Ultimate tensile strength and yield strengthof the alloys can be significantly improved after T6 treatment. Mechanical properties of studiedalloys in T6 condition are better than that of WE54-T6 alloy

Notes: The microstructure, mechanical properties and creep behavior of Mg-Gd-Y-Zr alloys atdifferent temperatures and stresses have been investigated. Results show that the tensile propertiesand creep resistance at T6 condition is much higher than that at as-cast condition. The creepresistance of Mg-Gd-Y-Zr alloy at 250℃/80MPa is markedly better than that at 300℃/50MPa,indicating that temperature makes more effects on the creep resistance than the stress
