    Notes: Static electricity is a frequent source of fires and explosions in industry. A variety of operations may generate static electricity leading to such fires and explosions. This requires adequate preventive and protective measures against this hazard. The present paper describes the theory and mechanism of electrostatic sparking, parameters needed to assess the respective hazard in a plant, safety measures to combat electrostatic problems, common operations where such problems exist and measures to eliminate or mitigate these problems.

    Notes: The energy consumption of ammonia plants based on steam reforming of naphtha or natural gas can be reduced by shifting the reforming load from the primary to the secondary reformer. It is shown that lowering of the primary reformer operating temperature 20 °C results in 2% increase of unconverted methane content in the outlet stream. The increased methane content can be processed in the secondary reformer if the process air inlet temperature is increased to 400 °C. The lower operating temperature reduces the energy consumption of the primary reformer by about 6% (and the overall consumption by about 2%) and also prolongs the service life of reformer tubes.

    Notes: The minimum ignition temperature of dust clouds is one of the important factors required for the design of preventive measures against dust explosion. The mathematical models available to predict this parameter have been analyzed for thier application to organic dust clouds. A solution of the most general model proposed by Mitsui and Tanaka is presented, together with its comparision with experimental data. It has been found to be quite successful in predicting the minimum ignition temperature for metal dusts but not for organic dusts. Recommendations for the development of a new model to predict the minimum ignition temperature of an organic dust, such as polyethylene, have been given.

    Notes: Surface culture citric acid fermentation was carried out by Aspergillus niger T55, a strain isolated from its natural source, using cane molasses, either untreated or treated by various methods. Citric acid biosynthesis is seriously impaired by both organic and inorganic inhibitors. A combined treatment of molasses with tricalcium phosphate, hydrochloric acid, and Sephadex fractionation minimizes the level of inorganic and organic inhibitors in molasses and increases the production of citric acid (65% weight yield based on total reducing sugar). The optimum level of individual metal ions for citric acid production depends on the concentration of other metals in the medium.
