Notizen: Abstract This article is devoted to the study of the propagations of the nonlinear water waves on the shear flows. Assuming μ=kh is small andε/μ 2∼O(1), and the base flow is uniformly sheared, the modified Boussinesq equation is obtained. We calculate propagations of the single solitary wave with vorticity Γ=0,〉0 and 〈0. The influences of the vorticity are manifested. At the end examples of the interactions of two solitary waves, moving in opposite and the same directions, are given. Besides the phase shift, there also occur second wavelets after head-on collision.

Notizen: Abstract A new hybrid model, which is based on domain decomposition and proposed by the authors, is used for calculating the flow around a circular cylinder at low and middle Keulegan-Carpenter numbers (Kc=2−18) respectively. The vortex motion patterns in asymmetric regime, single pair (or transverse) regime and double pair (or diagonal) regime are successfully simulated. The calculated drag and inertial force coefficients are in better agreement with experimental data than other recent computational results.

Notizen: Abstract A new compact finite difference-Fourier spectral hybrid method for solving the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is developed in the present paper. The fifth-order upwind compact finite difference schemes for the nonlinear convection terms in the physical space, and the sixth-order center compact schemes for the derivatives in spectral space are described, respectively. The fourth-order compact schemes in a single nine-point cell for solving the Helmholtz equations satisfied by the velocities and pressure in spectral space is derived and its preconditioned conjugate gradient iteration method is studied. The treatment of pressure boundary conditions and the three dimensional non-reflecting outflow boundary conditions are presented. Application to the vortex dislocation evolution in a three dimensional wake is also reported.

Notizen: Abstract 3-D evolution of Kármán vortex filaments and vortex filaments in braid regions in the turbulent wake of a 2-D circular cylinder is investigated numerically based on inviscid vortex dynamics by analyzing the response of the initially 2-D spanwise vortex filaments to periodic spanwise disturbance of varying magnitude, wavelength and initial phase angles. Our results reveal a kind of 3-D vortex system in the wake which consists of large scale horseshoe-shaped vortices and small scale γ-shaped vortex filaments as well as vortex loops. The mechanism and the dynamic process about the generation of streamwise vortical structure and the 3-D coherent structure are reported.

Notizen: Abstract In the present work, a further numerical simulation of the starting flow around a flat plate normal to the direction of motion in a uniform fluid has been made by means of the discrete vortex method. The secondary separation occurring at rear surface of the plate is explored, and predicted approximately using Thwait's method. The calculated results show that in the early stages of the flow secondary separation does occur. The evolution of flow field, the vortex growing process and the characteristics of secondary vortices have been described. The time dependent drag coefficients, the vorticity shed from the edges and rear surface, and the separation positions are calculated as well as the distributions of velocity and pressure on the plate. In the case of flow normal to the plate, the calculated secondary vortices are weak. Their existence will change the local velocity distributions and affect pressure distributions. However, the effect on drag coefficient is negligible.

Notizen: Abstract In the present paper the mechanism involved in vortex shedding flows is investigated in detail. In the early stage of the unsteady separated flow the interaction between secondary vortices and primary vortices is quite strong. In the later stage of the flow, corresponding to the vortex shedding the recirculating flow region on each side of the aft body goes through such a cycle: growth-contraction-growth, the secondary separation occurs periodically rather than continuously. The reduction of circulation is taken into account in three cases with different decay factors to study its influence on the prediction of main flow characteristics. Results show that to simulate vortex shedding flow it is necessary to include the reduction of circulation to bring the calculated results into good agreement with experiments. An improved discrete vortex model is suggested in which both the secondary separation and the reduction are incorporated. The processes of vortex shedding, the forces prediction and other flow characteristics are given and some discussions are made.

Notizen: Abstract Numerical study on near wake flows of a flat plate in three kinds of oncoming flows is made by using the discrete vortex model and improved vorticity creation method. For steady oncoming flow, both gross and detailed features of the wake flow are calculated and discussed. Then, in harmonic oscillatory oncoming flow two different wake flow patterns withK c=2,4 and 10 are obtained respectively. Our results present a new wake flow pattern for lowKc numbers (Kc〈5) describing vortex shedding, pairing and moving in a period of the oscillatory flow starting from rest. The calculated drag and inertia force coefficients are closer to experimental data from the U-tube than the previous results of vortex simulation. For in-line combined oncoming flow the vortex lock-in and dynamic characteristics are simulated. The results are shown to be in good agreement with experiments.

Notizen: Abstract The evolution of wake structures and variation of the forces on a flat plate in harmonic oscillatory and in-line combined flows are obtained numerically by improved discrete vortex method. For the oscillatory oncoming flow cases, wyenKc number varies from 2 to 40, the vortex pattern changes from a “harmonic wave” shaped (in a range of smallKc number) to a slight inclined “harmonic wave” shaped (in a range of moderateKc numbers), then to inclined vortex clusters with an angle of 50° to the oncoming flow direction (atKc=20), at last, asKc number becomes large, the vortex pattern is like a normal Karman vortex street. The well predicted drag and inertia force coefficients are obtained, which are more close to the results of Keulegan & Carpenter's experiment as compared with previous vortex simulation by other authors. The existence of minimum point of inertia force coefficientC m nearKc=20 is also well predicted and this phenomenon can be interpreted according to the vortex structure. For steady-oscillatory in-line combined flow cases, the vortex modes behave like a vortex street, exhibit a “longitudinal wave” structure, and a vortex cluster shape corresponding to the ratios ofU m toU 0 which are ofO (10−1)O(1) andO(10), respectively. The effect on the prediction of forces on the flat plate from the disturbance component in a combined flow has been demonstrated qualitatively. In addition to this, the lock in phenomenon of vortex shedding has been checked.

Notizen: Abstract A hybrid finite difference method and vortex method (HDV), which is based on domain decomposition and proposed by the authors (1992), is improved by using a modified incomplete LU decomposition conjugate gradient method (MILU-CG), and a high order implicit difference algorithm. The flow around a rotating circular cylinder at Reynolds number Re=1000, 200 and the angular to rectilinear speed ratio a∈(0.5,3.25) is studied numerically. The long-time full developed features about the variations of the vortex patterns in the wake, and drag, lift forces on the cylinder are given. The calculated streamline contours agreed well with the experimental visualized flow pictures. The existence of critical states and the vortex patterns at the states are given for the first time. The maximum lift to drag force ratio can be obtained nearby the critical states.
