Notes: ac conductivity σ(ω), dielectric constant ε', and loss ε‘ of vinyl chloride:vinyl acetate (VC:VAc) copolymers having 3%, 10%, and 17% VAc content (by weight) have been measured in the temperature range 77–410 K and in the frequency range 50 Hz–100 kHz. At low temperatures up to 250 K, the ac conductivity can be expressed by σ(ω)=Aωs, where the slope s is close to unity and its value decreases with the increase in temperature. The dielectric constant in this temperature region shows a very weak frequency and temperature dependence. At temperatures above 300 K, the ac conductivity shows a strong temperature dependence; however, in this temperature region the dielectric constant shows a strong frequency dispersion. The measured dielectric loss as a function of temperature reveals the β1, the β2, and the α relaxations. The β1 relaxation is associated with the movement of the more flexible side group dipoles and the β2 relaxation is due to the movement of rigidly attached side group dipoles, whereas the α relaxation is attributed to the segmental motion of the main chain of the copolymer. Both the latter relaxations seem to be long range in nature with distribution of relaxation times associated with the cooperative motion. The mechanism of conduction in the low- and high-temperature regions have been discussed in light of existing theoretical models.

Notes: Abstract The authors present a case of ureterovaginal fistula following laparoscopy-assisted vaginal hysterectomy, which was successfully managed by ureteroneocystostomy with bladder psoas hitch.

Notes: Abstract Female incontinent episadias is a very rare congenital anomaly presenting in childhood. We report 2 cases of adults presenting with this anomaly. These were treated by total genitourinary reconstruction in a single stage using a combined perineal abdominal approach, with satisfactory results. We recommend this technique as the procedure of choice in adults presenting with this rare anomaly.

Notes: Abstract The Mössbauer recoilless fractions (f) for solid83Kr, corresponding to 9.3 keV γ-ray energy, have been calculated from 0–90 K with quasi-harmonic central-force rigid-atom model and using (exp. 6) and Buckingham potential functions. The two sets of the fractions show reasonably satisfactory agreement with experimental results. Possible causes of the discrepancy between theory and experiment have been discussed.

Notes: Abstract Purpose: Primary obstructive megaureter (POM) is an uncommon disease in adults. We reviewed our experience with this disease to determine the clinical profile, management and prognosis of this disease in adults. Methods: We studied 37 adults with POM who presented from January 1989 to December 1998. Their clinical presentation, renal function, radiologic data, complications, treatment as well as the results and follow-up were studied. Results: The patients' age ranged from 13 to 52 years. Male : female ratio was 27 : 10. Seven patients had bilateral disease. All patients were symptomatic excepting 2. Complications at presentation were loin pain (26 cases), urinary infection (15 cases), calculus disease (17 cases), azotaemia (5 cases), and obstructive jaundice (1 case). Associated congenital anomalies included contralateral renal agenesis (2 cases), posterior urethral valve (1 case) and exstrophy of bladder (1 case). Thirty-four patients required surgical intervention. Of these, 26 patients underwent ureteroneocystostomy (UNC) with ureteral tailoring in 18 patients; 4 patients were treated endoscopically by ureteric meatotomy and stenting, 2 patients with nonfunctioning kidney by nephroureterectomy, 2 patients in advanced renal failure by percutaneous nephrostomy alone. In 4 out of 5 patients uraemia did not improve despite adequate drainage. Conclusion: The majority of adults with POM are symptomatic, have complications and require surgical correction. Complications of stone formation (46%) and renal failure (13.5%) are unusually common in adults. Once renal failure is advanced, intervention appears futile, therefore, it is imperative to treat these patients as soon as possible. Surgical correction by ureteric reimplantation is effective and has low morbidity.

Notes: Summary Metroglyph and index score analysis was carried out with 15 Indian and 15 exotic varieties of maize currently being used in the breeding programme of the Coordinated Maize Improvement Project at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. It was found that the Indian varieties under study fall into three morphological complexes which differed among themselves. The variability pattern of the second and third Indian complexes resembled that of Mexican and Colombian germ plasm. The variability pattern of the Caribbean germ plasm was different from the Indian complexes. Index score analysis also gave similar results. Previous breeding experiments also confirmed the findings that these varieties might have originated from a few Mexican or Colombian introductions.
