Notes: Additive genetic variance in large-seeded common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), mostly of Andean South American origin, was higher than nonadditive variance for all traits. Heritability was 0.43 ± 0.19 for yield, 0.49 ± 0.20 for pods/m2, 0.63 ± 0.21 for seeds/m2, 0.76 ± 0.23 for 100-seed weight, and 0.55 ± 0.22 for days to maturity. Expected gain from selection (expressed in percentage of the population mean) was 9.2 for yield, 12.8 for pods/m2, 21.0 for seeds/m2, 17.6 for 100-seed weight, and 4.6 for days to maturity.

Notes: Two populations of common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., were used to make three independent location-specific selections at Palmira, Quilichao, and Popayán, Colombia. Also, three across-location selections were made by alternating generations between Palmira and Popayan, between Quilichao and Popayán, and among Palmira, Quilichao, and Popayán. The seven highest yielding lines selected from each environment and population along with 14 parents and two checks were evaluated for seed yield, seed weight, maturity, and reaction to an-thracnose, angular leaf spot, and common bacterial blight. Mean squares due to evaluation and selection environments, selected lines, and their interactions were significant for all traits. Mean yields of selected lines were higher than the mean of parents in both populations. Among location-specific selections, lines yielded higher at their respective selection site. Moreover, selections made at Popayán were higher yielding than those made at Quilichao or Palmira when tested across locations and years. Use of Popayán, a relatively wetter and cooler site, either alone or in combination with other locations resulted in higher yield, higher seed weight, and higher resistance to anthracnose. On the average, location-specific selections were lower yielding than the across-location selections. Among across-location selections, those selected between Palmira and Popayán were the highest yielding in both populations. Selections at Palmira and across all three locations resulted in greater stability.

Notes: Summary The synthesis and characterization of two new ligands derived from the 1:1 and 1:2Schiff base condensation of benzoylacetylacetone with N-benzylethylenediamine as well as some of their metal complexes are reported. The 1:1Schiff base1 is a potential tetradentate, binucleating ligand with two adjacent coordination sites NNO(X) (X=Cl, NO3) and OO(XY), whereX andY are exogenic donor atoms. The reaction of1 with PdCl 4 2− affords a mononuclear, square-planar complex3a with the metal atom coordinated to the NNO site of1 and to Cl−. The X-ray structure of this complex shows that the coordination of the Pd atom by an NNO (Cl) moiety reduces the available space in OO(XY) site for coordinating another metal atom; moreover, the small distance between the two oxygen atoms of the “hard base” site OO(XY) suggests the presence of hydrogen bonding and therefore this proton is not easily displaced by a typical soft acid such as Pd2+. When the same ligand reacts with Ni(II) or Cu(II) nitrates, again only mononuclear complexes3b and3c are obtained with the same donor atoms as for the Pd(II) complex but withX=NO3. The 1:2Schiff base4, a potentially binucleating ligand with two non-equivalent coordination sites NNO(X), was not isolated as a free ligand. However, it gave the binuclear Hg(II) complex5 by the reaction of benzoylacetylacetone and N-benzylethylenediamine in the presence of HgCl2.

Notes: Abstract Objective To assess the hemodynamic effects of high mean proximal airway pressures (Paw) during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) in non-neonatal pediatrics patients with severe respiratory failure. Design Prospective and retrospective study. Setting Pediatric ICU in a university-affiliated hospital. Patients 8 non-neonatal pediatric patients with severe respiratory failure ventilated with HFOV at our institution between July 1991 and February 1994. All patients had a pulmonary artery catheter. Interventions HFOV. Measurements and results Higher Paw was required during HFOV to obtain adequate lung expansion during the first 24 h (median 20.9 cmH2O, range 16.9–30.0 cmH2O in CMV, versus median 30.0 cmH2O, range 21.0–33.0 cmH2O in HFOV,p=0.008), resulting in improved oxygenation as evaluated by alveolar-arterial oxygen difference (median of 557.2 mmHg, range 360.4–607.8 mmHg in CMV, versus median of 410.5 mmHg, range 282.9–550.2 mmHg after 24 h of HFOV,p=0.03). The only observed effect on the cardiovascular system was a decrease in heart rate (median of 162, range 129–178 in CMV, versus median of 142, range 104–195 after 24 h of HFOV,p=0.03). Oxygen delivery, cardiac index, mean systemic arterial blood pressure, and pulmonary and systemic vascular resistances did not change significantly before and after HFOV in the patients as a group, although in one case a decrease in cardiac index and oxygen delivery was observed. Conclusions High-Paw HFOV must be used cautiously, but seems to have no discernible adverse effects on the cardiovascular system in most patients.
