Notizen: We revisit the far from equilibrium escape problem across a fluctuating potential barrier that is driven by asymmetric, unbiased dichotomous noise. Our closed analytical solution for arbitrary noise strengths reveals new aspects of the so-called "resonant-activation" effect and leads to interesting implications regarding far from equilibrium or externally controlled chemical reaction processes. Specifically, a genuine asymmetry-induced variant of resonant activation within the constant intensity scaling scheme is discovered, and a new possibility to manipulate reaction rates and yields, as well as the balance between reactants and products, is put forward. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we continue to extend our previous investigation of continued fraction (CF) solutions for the stationary probability of discrete one-variable master equations which generally do not satisfy detailed balance. We derive explicit expressions, directly in terms of the elementary transition rates, for the continued fraction recursion coefficients. Further, we derive several approximate CF-solutions, i.e., we deduce non-systematic and systematic truncation error estimates. The method is applied to two master equations with two-particle jumps for which we derive the exact probability solution and make a comparison with approximate solutions. The investigation is also extended to the case of master equations with multiple birth and death transitions of maximal orderR.

Notizen: Abstract We investigate the rate at which a particle decays out of a metastable potential well by quantum tunneling. We calculate the leading corrections to the exponent and the prefactor of the rate, due to coupling to the heat bath and finite temperatures. Since the results are essentially equivalent to those employing the transition state assumption, namely maintaining thermal equilibrium, we argue for the lower on the damping strength above which these results should be valid. These results are in good accord with recently reported experiments.

Notizen: Abstract We present the continued fraction solution for the stationary probability of discrete master equations of one-variable processes. After we elucidate the method for simple birth and death processes we focus the study on processes which introduce at least two-particle jumps. Consequently, these processes do in general not obey a detailed balance condition. The outlined method applies as well to solutions of eigenmodes of the stochastic operator. Further we derive explicit continued fraction solutions for the Laplace transform of conditional probabilities. All the various continued fraction coefficients are given directly in terms of the transition rates and they obey recursion relations. The method is illustrated for the stationary solution of a simple nonlinear chemical reaction scheme originated by Nicolis.

Notizen: Abstract For a given master equation of a discontinuous irreversible Markov process, we present the derivation of stochastically equivalent Langevin equations in which the noise is either multiplicative white generalized Poisson noise or a spectrum of multiplicative white Poisson noise. In order to achieve this goal, we introduce two new stochastic integrals of the Ito type, which provide the corresponding interpretation of the Langevin equations. The relationship with other definitions for stochastic integrals is discussed. The results are elucidated by two examples of integro-master equations describing nonlinear relaxation.

Notizen: Abstract We investigate the time evolution of stochastic non-Markov processes as they occur in the coarse-grained description of open and closed systems. We show that semigroups of propagators exist for all multivariate probability distributions, the generators of which yield a set of time-convolutionless master equations. We discuss the calculation of averages and time-correlation functions. Further, linear response theory is developed for such a system. We find that the response function cannot be expressed as an ordinary time-correlation function. Some aspects of the theory are illustrated for the two-state process and the Gauss process.

Notizen: Abstract The time evolution of the single event probability of macroscopic variables is studied from a microscopic point of view. The explicit consideration of the preparation of the initial microdistribution leads to a unique decomposition of the macrodynamics into two parts, a local and instantaneous one and a nonlocal and retarded one. In this retarded, i.e., non-Markovian master equation no inhomogeneity occurs in contrast to previous approaches. It is shown that the retarded master equation can exactly be transformed into a time-convolutionless and homogeneous form $$\dot p(t) = \Gamma (t)p(t)$$ , which generates a substitutive Markov process with the same single event behaviour as the process in question.

Notizen: Abstract: We introduce phase space concepts to describe quantum states in a disordered system. The merits of an inverse participation ratio defined on the basis of the Husimi function are demonstrated by a numerical study of the Anderson model in one, two, and three dimensions. Contrary to the inverse participation ratios in real and momentum space, the corresponding phase space quantity allows for a distinction between the ballistic, diffusive, and localized regimes on a unique footing and provides valuable insight into the structure of the eigenstates.

Notizen: Abstract: Two previously suggested, physically distinct mechanisms for a growth instability of vapor deposited films, the finite atomic size effect and the particle deflection effect due to interatomic attraction, are reconsidered, further analyzed, and compared. We substantiate why the instability caused by interatomic attraction must be considered as the truly underlying instability mechanism. We demonstrate that aspects of the structure zone model of Movchan and Demchishin can also be consistently explained using the growth instability induced by particle deflection instead of the instability arising from the atomic size effect. Most significantly we show that, for vapor deposited amorphous Zr65Al7.5Cu27.5-films, the growth instability due to the atomic size effect cannot be present.

Notizen: Abstract We study the time-evolution of the joint and the conditional probability of macroscopic variables of a closed system from a microscopic point of view. We derive an exact generalized master equation for their time rate of change which consists of two parts, one instantaneous and local in state space, the other retarded and nonlocal in state space. It is represented by stochastic operators depending both on the initial preparation and on the initial macrodistribution, which reflects the non-Markovian character of the process. The connection with the time-evolution of the single-event probability is discussed.
