    Notes: Abstract The potential of using short-chain fatty acids and α-keto-acid as precursors for the production of typical fruit-type aroma compounds by strawberry cell suspension cultures was investigated. Analysis of the headspace by gas chromatography revealed that supplemented strawberry cell suspension cultures were capable of producing low concentrations of ethyl butyrate and butyl butyrate, and converting α-ketovalerate to butanal and butanol. No aroma compounds were produced in unsupplemented or heat-treated cell suspension cultures. The results indicated that esterase, decarboxylase, and alcohol dehydrogenase might exist in strawberry cell cultures. Increasing temperature, illumination and addition of mannitol favoured the production of butyl butyrate. No difference was found between one- and two-week-old cultures in the ability to convert precursors to corresponding aroma compounds.

    Notes: This paper presents an adapted Gummel method (AGM) used in the two-dimensional device simulation of an amorphous-silicon (a-Si) thin-film transistor (TFT). Firstly, the AGM for amorphous silicon is developed by modifying the Gummel method (GM) for crystalline silicon. Secondly, the AGM is implemented into a two-dimensional device simulator for the simulation of a-Si TFTs. The simulation results show that the AGM converges well while the GM fails to converge for the simulation of a-Si TFTs. Hence, the AGM is a useful technique for the simulation and analysis of a-Si TFTs. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The population dynamics of developing somatic embryos of carrot (Daucur carota L.) was investigated in batch and fed-batch cultures using modified Murashige and Skoog medium. These substrate limitations coincided not only with stoppage of biomass increase, but also with the increase in total concentration of embryos as well as the advancement of the embryo into a more mature stage. Both glucose and ammonium were depleted from the culture. Restoring either glucose, or ammonium and nitrate, as to approximately initial concentrations in fed-batch experiments, did not result in a significant increase of the total normal embryo concentration. On the other hand, medium replacement led to increase in biomass concentration, total embryo number, and improved embryo maturity. The addition of a mixture of glucose, ammonium, and nitrate to the spent medium resulted in variable increases in biomass and embryo number, but always less than those resulting from media replacement. Although the total number of embryos was higher after medium replacement, the fraction of embryos reaching torpedo stage was still only 50%. The need for a better means of population characterization for further kinetic studies is discussed. © 1993 Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Abstract The murine bone marrow stromal cell line, LC2, cultivated on porous microcarriers, displayed cell density-dependent growth, which was alleviated by its own conditioned-medium. Volumetric production of the colony-stimulating activity in the microcarrier culture was many fold over that obtained from the T-flask culture, providing a means of scaling up for production.

    Notes: Abstract Proliferation of three murine marrow-derived stromal cell lines, LC1, LC2, and LC3, depended on initial cell density. For LC2 and LC3, the cell density-dependence was negated by conditioned-media, indicating growth dependence on a soluble growth factor. For LC1, conditioned-media failed to stimulate proliferation, suggesting growth dependence on direct cell-cell contact.

    Notes: Summary The average specific oxygen uptake rate of carrot (Daucus carota L.) somatic embryos in batch culture decreased with cultivation time, coinciding with an increase in the size and maturity of the embryos. From experiments performed on three size classes obtained at 15 days of culture, larger embryos were found to have a lower oxygen uptake rate suggesting either a lower intrinsic metabolic activity and/or transport limitations leading to a reduction in the observed metabolic activity.
