Conclusions The above reported results allow us to classify the “Wavre” isolate in the picorna group. Most porcine enteroviruses that have been described have not been studied extensively on their hemagglutinating activity (Betts, 1964), but the attempts that have been reported have given negative results (Beran, 1958;Moscovici, 1959;Webster, 1959;Jastrzebski, 1961;Switzer andL'Ecuyer, 1960;Morimoto et al., 1962;Izawa et al., 1962;Kelly, 1962;Kasza, 1965;Kubin, 1965). The virus isolated byHahnefeld from a porcine tissue culture had no hemagglutinating properties.Greig andGirard (1963) described the characteristics of a hemagglutinating virus causing encephalomyelitis in swine, but this virus differs markedly from our isolate and was considered by the authors to belong to the parainfluenza group.
