Notes: Murine interferon-inducible T-cell alpha chemoattractant (I-TAC) is a potent non-ELR CXC chemokine that predominantly attracts activated T lymphocytes, binds to the receptor CXCR3 and is induced by interferon-γ (IFN-γ). We analysed I-TAC expression by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction during three different virus-infection models in mice, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza A and vaccinia virus western reserve (VV-WR). In the lungs from mice infected with RSV or influenza A viruses, peak expression of I-TAC coincided with peak viraemia. Surprisingly, there was no expression in the lungs of mice infected with vaccinia, unlike the elevated expression shown previously for other interferon-regulated chemokines, such as Crg2 and Mig. To further investigate the importance of this difference during vaccinia infection in mice, a recombinant virus encoding I-TAC (rVV I-TAC) was generated. Studies in C57BL/6 and Swiss nude mice showed that I-TAC expression caused increased mononuclear cell infiltration and significantly attenuated the VV. Infection of the footpads of naïve or already immune (with VV-WR) mice with either rVV I-TAC or VV-WR demonstrated that I-TAC expression reduced overall inflammation during infection and that this reduction was more pronounced in already immune mice. The data presented here show that I-TAC can have an important role during virus infections and that vaccinia has evolved ways to avoid inducing I-TAC expression.

Notes: Murine interferon-inducible T cell alpha chemokine (I-TAC) is a potent non-ELR Cys-X-Cys (CXC) chemokine that predominantly attracts activated T lymphocytes and binds to the receptor CXCR3. Using semiquantitative reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR) we analysed murine I-TAC expression in two different progenitor dendritic cell (DC) lines, MTHC-D2 and JAWS II which were exposed to various cytokines, and Con A-activated splenocytes from a panel of knockout mice. Analysis of the progenitor DC lines and Con A cultures demonstrated that murine I-TAC is primarily regulated by interferon (IFN)-γ via interferon regulatory factor (IRF)-1. It has been proposed that I-TAC may have a role in autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Because I-TAC appears to be secreted from antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and attracts activated T cells, we examined the level of murine I-TAC mRNA in the central nervous system (CNS) of wild-type and IFN-γ-receptor knockout (IFN-γR−/−) mice with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)35–55 peptide-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Peak I-TAC expression was detected in wild-type mice on day 14 when the mice begin to recover, whereas very low levels of I-TAC were detected in the CNS of IFN-γR−/− mice which develop severe EAE and die. The expression characteristics of murine I-TAC suggest an important mediator of immune cell communication that could augment vaccines and autoimmune therapies.

Notes: Abstract Investigations were conducted to study the feasibility of a solid-state battery system for storage applications. During the development of various high energy density solid-state batteries we noted that the solid electrolyte material, LiI dispersed in large surface area Al2O3, has a high ionic conductivity at elevated temperatures, (for example 0.1Ω−1 cm−1 at 300° C) and is suitable for high-rate storage battery applications. In solid-state battery systems both the electrodes and electrolytes are in the solid state under the operating conditions of the battery. The absence of any liquid phase makes the individual cell containers unnecessary in a multicell battery resulting in a simplified battery structure and increased package efficiency. Furthermore, no material compatibility problem is encountered in the system. As a result, the solid-state battery system has excellent charge retention characteristics and a long projected operating life. Solid-state test cells, Li-Si/LiI(Al2O3)/TaS2/Ta, Li-Si/LiI(Al2O3/TiS2/Ti and Li-Si/LiI(Al2O3)/TiS2, Sb2S3, Bi were constructed and subjected to discharge-charge cycle tests at 300±10° C, at 13·7 mA cm−2. Preliminary test results demonstrated that these solid-state battery systems are rechargeable and may be suitable for both load levelling and/or vehicle propulsion. From the considerations of material availability and cost and operational efficiencies it was concluded that the Li-Si/LiI(Al2O3)/TiS2, Sb2S3, Bi system is most suitable among the three systems studied for the development of practical storage batteries. Preliminary design studies showed that practical energy densities of 200W h kg−1 and 520 W h l−1 can be realized with the Li-Si/TiS2, Sb2S3, Bi storage batteries.

Notes: Abstract Design and performance characteristics of a high-rate D-cell and a super-high-rate flat cell, three inches in diameter and less than an inch high, are discussed. The flat cell had a short-circuit current of 1500 A and delivered approximately 20 A h on a 20 A continuous or pulse mode. The cell delivered 14 A h on 100 A continuous drain. Both types of cells were found to be resistant to shorting and forced discharge abuses.

Notes: Abstract Morphological characteristics of myocardial ventricular myocytes have been evaluated from 5 mammalian orders with resting heart rates ranging from 51 to 475 bpm. The purpose was to determine if morphological characteristics of the myocardia are related to the functional demand imposed on the cell as represented by the resting heart rate. Cell size is a constant among mammals of different sizes which have different physiological demands. In contrast, there is more mitochondrial area and less myofibrillar area per cell in animals with rapidly beating hearts than in animals with slower heart rates. Additionally, the mean cross sectional area of individual myofibrils is 30% larger in the cow as compared to the mouse. These findings combined with our previous studies indicate that the different functional requirements of myocardia from different mammalian orders are satisfied by intracellular adaptations of both a structural and biochemical nature.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The authors measured the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy of approximately 400 specimens cut from oriented samples of greywacke taken at forty sites in a 1500 square-mile area in the Diablo Range, Central California. The magnetic fabric was judged to be of primary style at thirteen sites and to indicate that the direction of sediment transport was along an axis aligned N 60 E, with little variation in alignment over the area of the study. Rocks at the remaining sites were thought to have suffered slight but variable deformation, prior to folding, by a stress acting along an east-west axis. The rocks at five sites were metagreywackes. Although the metamorphism of these is believed to be the result of great pressure, there was no obvious effect of this pressure on the magnetic fabric.
