Summary By theoretical reasons the titrimetric determination of stool-fat content by the Van de Kamer method seems to be not suitable, when patients are receiving diets containing predominantly medium-chain triglycerides, because light petroleum does not completely extract medium-chain fatty acids from aequous ethanol. However these experiments have shown, that 63±3% of the medium-chain fatty acids (C8–C10) are extracted by the original, standardized Van de Kamer procedure. The completeness of extraction of long-chain fatty acids to the extraction of medium-chain fatty acids behaves nearly like the relation of the average molecular weights of long-chain to medium-chain fatty acids. Therefore the recovery of medium-chain triglycerides by titrimetric determination and calculation according toVan de Kamer is 111±3%. The long-chain triglyceride tripalmitin however has, because of a lower molecular weight, a recovery of 113±3%. Consequently the error by the titrimetric determination and calculation of medium-chain triglycerides according toVan de Kamer is even lower than the general inaccuracy of this method.
Notes:
