    Notes: The performance of a CsI photocathode for hard x rays (8–46 keV) was compared to a Au photocathode using synchrotron radiation. We found that the sensitivity of CsI (100 nm thick) is 20–100 times higher than that of Au (30 nm thick), depending on the photon energy. The time response for 40 ps pulses is also improved slightly using CsI due to its narrower secondary electron energy spread. The study was performed in a streak camera environment; thus the results obtained include the instrumental effects of the camera and directly show the real performance of the cathodes for streak cameras. Although the question of material stiffness still remains for CsI, no degradation of cathode performance was observed during the present study. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have developed a control system to synchronize intense picosecond laser pulses to the hard x-ray synchrotron radiation (SR) pulses of SPring-8. A regeneratively amplified mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser is synchronized to 40 ps SR pulses by locking the laser to the radio frequency of the ring. The synchronization of the pulses is monitored by detecting both beams simultaneously on a gold photocathode of a streak camera. This method enabled us to make a precise measurement of the time interval between the beams, even if the trigger of the streak camera drifts. Synchronization between the laser and the SR pulses has been achieved with a precision of ±2 ps for some hours. The stable timing control ensures the possibility of making two-photon excitation and pump–probe experiments with time resolution of a few tens of ps (limited by the pulse duration of the SR). We have used this system to show that closing undulator gaps in the storage ring shifts the arrival time of the SR pulses, in accord with expectations for the increased power loss. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The figure-8 undulator is a novel insertion device adopted as a light source at the soft x-ray photochemistry beamline of the Super Photon ring-8GeV. It was designed to produce linearly polarized soft x rays between 100 and 5000 eV with low on-axis power density. Magnetic fields of the constructed device were measured with compensation for the planar Hall effect using two different methods. After magnetic-field corrections, it was found that the first-harmonic intensity and the on-axis power density calculated using the measured fields were almost the same as ideal ones. After installation in the storage ring, a power-distribution pattern was observed by a fluorescent screen and it was found that the shape corresponded to expectation. The quantity of fluctuation of the photon-beam axis was estimated by measuring spectra at various observation angles and it was found to be small compared to the photon-beam size. In addition, it was also found that the measured spectrum at the gap of 77 mm agreed well with the calculated one. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A long undulator is a direct way to create a brilliant synchrotron radiation source. However, the length of undulators has been bounded by technical limitations and available space in accelerators. The first long undulator was developed at SPring-8, which is a third-generation synchrotron radiation facility equipped with four 30-m-long straight sections, making it the most brilliant x-ray source in the world. The magnets are placed inside a vacuum chamber and this makes it possible to arrange 780 periods continuously for 25 m. The absolute flux and spectrum of the output radiation were measured and compared with theory. The observed spectrum is in a good agreement with theory once the electron beam orbit was corrected for geomagnetic fields. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A figure-8 undulator is an insertion device (ID) proposed at SPring-8 to reduce the heat-load problems encountered with ordinary linear undulators. This device is useful when the K value is high in order to obtain low-energy photons as the fundamental of the undulator radiation. It has therefore been adopted as the ID for the soft X-ray photochemistry beamline (BL27SU) at SPring-8 because linearly polarized photons between 100 and 2000 eV are necessary for the experiments on this beamline. The figure-8 undulator for BL27SU is now under construction and, in the first phase of operation, is expected to cover the energy range down to 500 eV. In the second and third phases, the lowest energy may be reduced to 170 and 100 eV, respectively.

    Notes: We have suggested B2-(Pt, Ir)Ti as high temperature shape memory alloys. The phase transformation of (Pt, Ir)-50at% Ti from B2 to B19(2H) or 4H(4O) structures was investigated in our previous study. The microstructure suggested martensitic transformation. In this study, thermal expansion measurement and cyclic compression test were performed for (Pt, Ir)Ti to investigate if the shape memory effect appears. High temperature strength was also investigated because phasetransformation temperature of the (Pt, Ir)Ti is above 1273 K and high strength is necessary as high temperature shape memory alloys in order to suppress dislocation motion and stabilize martenstic transformation. The potential of (Pt, Ir)Ti as high temperature shape memory alloys will be also discussed

    Notes: Several Fe – O samples containing different fractions of dispersed oxides were processed by mechanical milling followed by consolidating rolling. The samples were annealed at 1000oC and then compressed to strains of 0.35, 1.2, and 1.9 at an ambient temperature. Dispersed oxides with size of about 20 nm were homogeneously distributed throughout the ferrite matrix and their volumefractions varied from about 0.3% to 2.0%. To study the annealing softening mechanisms, the coldworked specimens were annealed for an hour at 700oC and 800oC. The fine dispersion of oxide particles was very effective to suppress any softening processes. Primary recrystallization fully developed in the samples with volume fraction of dispersed oxides of about 0.3%. Increase in the fraction of dispersed oxides resulted in decrease of the fraction recrystallized. In the samplescontaining 2.0 vol.% of dispersed oxides, only recovery was the annealing softening process irrespective of the preceding cold strain. The critical volume fraction of dispersed particles for development of the primary recrystallization is considered to range from 0.5 to 2.0%

    Notes: A figure-8 undulator of the in-vacuum type has been adopted as an insertion device for BL24XU, the Hyogo Beamline at SPring-8, to provide hard X-rays with both horizontal and vertical polarization instead of a tandem undulator consisting of horizontal and vertical undulators. The undulator will be operated with the gap almost fixed at 11.6 mm to provide the fundamental radiation with horizontal polarization at 9.5 keV and the 1.5th harmonic with vertical polarization at 14 keV.
