Notes: Starting out from a simple conceptual framework running from initial individual abilities to skills produced in school to the utilization of these skills in the labor market, this paper surveys empirical studies in labor economics, economics of education and occupational psychology to assess the empirical strength of the links between these sets of variables. Cognitive and non-cognitive abilities are relevant for economic success, but make a modest contribution. Occupational psychology is complementary to economics and supports the notion of interlocking heterogeneity of individuals and jobs.

Notes: From the stated price of a specified lottery in three unrelated surveys we deduce individuals’ Arrow-Pratt measure of risk aversion. We find that risk aversion indeed falls with income and wealth. Entrepreneurs are less risk averse than employees, civil servants are more risk averse than private sector employees, and women are more risk averse than men. A simple lottery question appears a promising survey instrument to explore risk attitude and its relation to personal characteristics.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Quality measurement of comminuted heated and cured meat products can be improved by the introduction of a direct analytical procedure for monitoring of its collagen-free muscle content. The purpose of this research is to determine muscle content by determination of one of its components, namely the protein actin. The proposed direct method consists of. separation of actin from other muscle proteins followed by determination of actin from its 3-methylhistidine content. This publication describes the separation procedure only. The G-actin or actin monomer was isolated and purified from pre-rigor bovine muscle. This preparation was well separated by SDS-gel filtration chromatography on the Ultrogel AcA 34 support. The actin monomer was located in the elution pattern by comparing it with a commercial actin preparation and by SDS-poly acrylamide gel electrophoresis. The chromatography offers good prospects for the determination of the actin from a meat product.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Quality regulations of the Guelders ring sausage are applied in the Netherlands. One of the quality parameters is the content of CFMP (collagen-free muscle protein) in the product. The purpose of this research is to substitute the usual indirect method by a direct analytical method for CFMP. The proposed direct method is composed of separation and determination of actin. Actin was well separated from the sausage product by SDS-gelfiltration chromatography, which was checked by SDS-polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. Actin was determined by its 3-methylhistidine content, but this result was smaller than expected. It was caused by the presence of salt during the 3-methylhistidine analysis. Finally, a method for the determination of actin by 3-methylhistidine was developed for the direct procedure. The relations of 3 MH (3-methylhistidine) with respective CFMP and MP (muscle protein) are formulated. Both formulae give a reasonably good estimation of 3 MH, CFMP or MP, one of these parameters of the Guelders ring sausage being known.

Notes: Summary Important changes in labor market parameters and a growing awareness of the cost of equity-promoting policies have led to increased interest in the efficiency of labor markets. This paper uses the orthodox result in the case of perfect competition to survey efficiency aspects of deviating assumptions: collective negotiations, imperfect information, risk and dynamics associated with education and technology. Perfect competition is found an inadequate standard, as many ‘imperfect’ market modifications enhance efficiency.

Notes: Summary This paper presents data on personal income distribution in the Netherlands for the period 1914–1972, in terms of decile income shares and measures of dispersion. Estimates are given of the trend and of cyclical sensitivity of income inequality, both trend and cycle being far more important before 1940 than after. Attempts to explain changes in inequality by regression analysis, with a necessarily limited set of variables, lead to many rejections.
