Pure Nordstrandite, γ-Al(OH)3, can be prepared by reaction of aluminium, aluminium hydroxide gel or slightly hydrolyzable aluminum compounds with aqueous solutions of alkylenediamines, especially ethylenediamine. Density d420 = 2.51 g/cm3. On heating, the formation of η-, Θ- and finally of α-Al2O3 occurs.The IR spectra indicate hydrogen bonds. The O—O distances are calculated from the absorption bands as 2.85 Å and the Al - O distances as 1.73 Å (mean values). It is assumed that γ-Al(OH)3 is a nonstoichiometric hydroxide.

Durch Behandlung von Aluminium, Aluminiumhydroxidgel oder leicht hydrolysierbaren Aluminiumverbindungen mit wäßrigen Lösungen von Alkylendiaminen, besonders von Äthylendiamin, bzw. durch Ausfällung von Aluminiumhydroxid in Anwesenheit von Alkylendiaminen kann Nordstrandit, γ-Al(OH)3, in reiner Form hergestellt werden. Dichte d420 = 2,51 g/cm3. Beim Erhitzen entsteht über η- und Θ-Al2O3 als Endprodukt das α-Al2O3; die Zersetzung in Oxid und Wasser im Vakuum bei PH2O = 10 Torr beginnt bei 210° C. Es gelang nicht, das γ-Al(OH)3 in die α- oder β-Form umzuwandeln.IR-Aufnahmen lassen auf Wasserstoffbrücken bindungen schließen; aus den Absorptionsbanden errechnen sich die O-O-Abstände der Wasserstoffbrücken im Mittel zu 2,85 Å, sowie die mittleren Al-O-Abstände zu 1,73 Å. Es wird angenommen, daß das γ-Al(OH)3 ebenfalls ein nichtstöchiometrisches Hydroxid darstellt.
