Notes: It is shown how a device can be constructed using a stack of magnetic supermirrors to produce high-intensity polarized neutron beams with a large area. The device makes use of the fact that single-crystal Si is transparent to neutrons. A prototypical device has been constructed which provides 64% neutron efficiency with 20 min collimation.

Notes: Small angle neutron scattering(SANS) is used to investigate the local order in aqueous, charge stabilized suspensions of 103 A(ring) diameter polystyrene latexspheres at ∼14 wt. % solids. These samples which evidence a close packed close packed structure in equilibrium are observed to undergo a transition to an amorphous order when sustaining a sufficiently large and steady shear. The shear melting phenomonology is different from that observed by light scattering for very dilute (0.16 wt. % solids) suspensions of polystyrene particles which form bcc lattices in equilibrium. Furthermore, neutron scattering reveals more detail than light scattering for concentrated suspensions and indicates a larger degree of three-dimensional ordering under steady shear flow than is implied by sliding layer models for similar systems.

Notes: Abstract We describe the general action of a neutron spin-turn coil by a rotation matrix, and the nett action of a sequence of spin-turns is then evaluated as the product of the relevant matrices. In the ideal neutron spin-echo configuration, the spin-turn sequence used is shown to have a resultant action described by the unit matrix if there is only elastic scattering, so that an initially polarized beam is transmitted with unchanged polarization. This is spin-echo focussing. Measurement of changes in the final polarization then provides information on the sample dynamics. Spin-echo focussing permits high resolution to be coupled with a broad incident wavelength spread. We calculate in detail the effect of this polychromaticity on the spinturn coils involved, and present experimental confirmation. General spin-echo configurations are then considered. Finally, we take into account the effect of spin-flip scattering from spin-incoherent samples, and show that spin-flip effects may be decoupled from dynamic effects in the analysis of spin-echo intensity. The techniques evolved are relevant to both monochromatic and polychromatic spinecho spectrometry. Emphasis has been placed on practical aspects of establishing correct spin-turn conditions and analysing spectrometer response in terms of relative transmitted intensity.

Notes: Abstract The matrix analysis of neutron spin-echo is extended to the general case of an asymmetric spectrometer configuration. It is shown that an integral transform of the incident or scattered beam spectrum may be measured by scanning the asymmetry, defined as the difference between the number of precessions in the two arms. The problem of inverting the integral transform is considered, and we show how the fast Fourier transform technique may be used as the basis for an efficient numerical solution. Experimental results confirming the calculation are presented. Since only a few precessions of asymmetry are needed to measure the spectrum of a broad incident beam, the technique provides a simple means of spectral analysis suitable for use on medium flux reactors.
