Notes: We investigated the coherent motion of vibrational wave packets in the |B〉 1Πu state of the potassium dimer applying two color pump/probe spectroscopy with a sub 100 fs time resolution. Special interest was paid to the ionization probe step which was analyzed carefully by varying the probe energy over a wide range. Time-dependent quantum calculations explain the experimental outcomes by introducing a nonconstant transition dipole moment between the |B〉 and the ionic state |X+〉 and by taking into account the excitation of long lived autoionizing Rydberg states. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigate the generation and real-time monitoring of coherent vibrational wave packets in the electronic ground state of supersonic jet-cooled potassium dimers. Vibrationally excited wave packets with mean quantum numbers v¯=6 and v¯=11 are generated by a stimulated Raman process which is enhanced by an electronic resonance. Two ultrashort laser pulses of different wavelengths induce the pump and the dump process. The population of the final hot ground-state wave packets is successfully controlled by a variable time delay between the pump and the dump process, which enables us to wait with the dumping for the optimal Franck–Condon overlap between the intermediate and the predicted final vibrational wave packet in the electronic ground state. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Understanding students' understanding of mathematical ideas can inform mathematics teaching, and task-based interviews are one way in which teachers can learn more about their students' understandings. The CIME project was designed to empower mathematics teachers to use interviews to understand their students' mathematical understandings as well as to prepare teachers to use technology-intensive curricula. This study examined the influences on three high school mathematics teachers as they learned to use task-based interviews to understand students' mathematical understandings. The areas of teacher knowledge and conceptions that influenced the teachers we studied were: teachers' mathematical understandings and knowledge of technology and the perceived importance of curriculum topics; teachers' views of knowing mathematics; teachers' perceptions of students' characteristics and needs; and teachers' perceptions of interviewing and the role of questioning in interviews.

Notes: Abstract: We present simulations on pump-dump-probe experiments performed on the potassium dimer. The interaction of two time-delayed laser pulses prepares vibrational wave packets in the electronic ground state. The quantum calculations reveal to what extent it is possible to prepare a ground state superposition of states with high versus low vibrational quantum numbers by changing the pump-dump delay time. It is shown that transient signals may exhibit interference effects which are due to characteristics of ground state wave-packets composed of two components showing different vibrational dynamics. In this way the signals are able to yield information about vibrational overtone motion.
