    Notes: Emission, absorption, and excitation spectroscopy has been used for a detailed analysis of the optical transitions of Hg2 trapped in cryogenic matrices. Upon excitation of electronic states correlating to the 3P1 or the 1P1 asymptote, fast nonradiative relaxation leads to emission from the lowest excited A0g+ state in all matrices, which decays monoexponentially in 1 ms in Ne, 280 μs in Ar, and 12 μs in Xe. In addition, electronically unrelaxed emission of Hg2 is reported in neon and in xenon matrices and attributed to the B1g state in neon and to the B1g state and the C0u− or A0g− states in xenon. The results are rationalized by assuming: (a) that population of the excited states occurs mainly close to the asymptotic limit, where branching is determined by nonadiabatic coupling and energetics, that are strongly environment dependent, and (b) that in Xe matrices the Hg2 states correlating to the 3P1 and 3P0 asymptotic limits are stabilized in different configurations, as a result of the very different solvation properties of the atomic 3P1 and the 3P0 state. Further emission bands are found in the vicinity of the dimer transitions, which we attribute to Hg3 and to site effects on Hg2. In particular, electronically unrelaxed emission from excited states of Hg3 is reported. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Measurements of the collision energy dependence of the chemi-ionization cross sections of the model systems He*(2 1,3S)+R, R=Ar,Kr,Xe, are presented for the relevant energy range 0.003–6 eV. Except for He*(2 1S)+Xe, all systems show a pronounced minimum of ionization at thermal energies. In the hyperthermal range, however, the two spin systems are in sharp contrast to each other: the triplet systems exhibit a broad saturating maximum of ionization, whereas the singlet systems reveal a shallow shaped second minimum (pronounced for Xe) which can be rationalized within the one-electron model potential calculations of Siska [J. Chem. Phys. 71, 3942 (1979)]. Using an effective single-channel Schrödinger equation, one finds, for all systems, complex potentials depending on distance only which properly model the measured features. A more profound picture appears when differential elastic cross sections from experiments of other groups are included. In the triplet case, differential elastic and chemi-ionization data can be adequately described with one complex potential, i.e., the local approximation holds. This is not found for the singlet systems. The hyperthermal minima instead give evidence that the optical singlet potentials are nonlocal. Various aspects of this striking spin dependence of the characteristics of He*(2 1,3S)+R are discussed. In particular, the breakdown of the local approximation in the singlet case can be rigorously derived. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on the ion-pair state emission spectra of Iodine isolated in Neon, Argon and Krypton matrices in the spectral range from 300 nm to 700 nm, and present VUV-absorption spectra in the 50 000–60 000 cm−1 region. Spectroscopic analysis of the UV and visible emission bands of the lowest-lying ion-pair state D′(2g) in Ne and Ar provides unambiguous evidence for both vertical (energy) and horizontal shifts (equilibrium distance) due to solvation in a rare gas matrix, and suggests that the ion-pair states maintain their distinct character. In Krypton the previously reported broad emission band at 420 nm is shown to consist of two narrow bands, which have counterparts in the visible. They are assigned to emission from D′(2g) and a second ion-pair states of I2, most probably the δ(2u) state. Partial charge delocalization to the matrix can only play a minor role in Kr since very similar emission is also found for secondary sites in Ar. These findings should be highly relevant for a description of ion-pair states in nonpolar media. They are also useful for the interpretation of time-resolved experiments that use the ion-pair state emission as probe signal. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
