    Notes: Abstract Tumor necrosis factor, TNF, is a 17-kDa protein secreted by macrophages and classified as a cytokine. TNF binds to high-affinity receptors on the cell surface and is involved in a wide variety of biological responses. There are at least two types of receptors, tumor necrosis factor receptors 1 and 2 (TNFR1 and TNFR2). The genes for TNFR1, a 55-kDa protein, and TNFR2, a 70-kDa protein, have been mapped to human chromosomes 1 12 (12pter-cen) and (1pter-p32), respectively, by Southern blot analysis of human × Chinese hamster somatic cell hybrid panels. Recently, the corresponding genes in the mouse have been mapped to chromosomes 4 and 6 in regions that are conserved on human chromosomes 1 and 12.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments performed on a ten-member redundant “fail-safe” structural model subjected to randomized load sequences confirm predictions of fatigue life and reliability based on a probabilistic approach. The statistical variation in ultimate strength of 2024-T4 aluminum alloy combined with an exponentially distributed, Markovian, bending load-amplitude sequence with a constant-amplitude S-N relation for single specimens, is utilized in the analysis. Experimental results are presented for the statistical distribution of ultimate bending strength of 2024-T4 aluminum alloy. Constant load-amplitude flat-bending fatigue tests on single specimens and on multimember structures, and variable-amplitude flat-bending tests on fail-safe structures are reported. Life to failure of the weakest member, as well as the remaining “fail-safe” life in the parallel structure, are examined.

    Notes: Abstract In order to reduce the stress concentration around a hole in a plate, new, “analogue” reinforcements instead of reinforcing rings were used in this investigation. In two of these specimens, reinforcements with different volume fractions were arranged to coincide with the stress trajectories for an infinite plate with a hole under uniaxial tension. Two other specimens containing straight rectangular-grid-type reinforcements were made by using a photofabrication method. Specimens were then prepared by sandwiching these reinforcements between two epoxy-resin plates. Plane specimens, i.e., without reinforcement, were also made of the same epoxy resin for comparison. The stress concentrations at the edge of the hole under uniaxial tension were determined by photoelastic techniques. The measured stress-concentration factors were compared with well-known values for an infinite, isotropic, homogeneous plate containing a hole. Results were also compared with published data on [90/0/90/0]s 7-ply laminated composite plates, and on plates strengthened with reinforcing rings. A definite reduction in stress concentration was observed on specimens containing analogue reinforcement.

    Notes: Abstract The rheological behavior of an elastomer composed of a polyurethane rubber filled with granular potassium chloride is studied on the basis of a series of compression tests with superimposed hydrostatic pressure. It is suggested that behavior may be approximated by a linear anelastic response for relatively small strains until a marked change in structure occurs, and that further deformation involves shear-dependent dilatation which is strongly influenced by mean pressure. Theories are suggested which describe the experimentally observed behavior.

    Notes: The use of fiber-reinforced composites in structures is discussed with emphasis on the need for a method to obtain long time properties from short time tests. Results of vibration, constant strain-rate and creep tests are presented for boron epoxy laminates. The data is statistically conditioned and a time-temperature shifting procedure is used to obtain master curves for response at an individual temperature. Three analytical linear viscoelastic characterization techniques are used to obtain long term creep response from dynamic data. Comparisons between analytical predictions are given for vibration and constant strain-rate data. Creep predictions are also compared to experimental observations.
