Notes: Purpose - To formulate an effective teaching prog ramme in the principles of clinical effectiveness for junior doctors, with simultaneous participation in a clinical audit project during their six-month period of employment. Design/methodology/approach - Accident and Emergency (A&E) Senior House Officers (SHOs) were educated in the principles of clinical effectiveness through a structured five-session approach whilst they concurrently performed their clinical audit project. Throughout the process the A&E SHOs were supported by the Clinical Effectiveness Unit and the A&E Consultant overseeing departmental audit. Findings - The structured teaching programme resulted in a good understanding of the clinical effectiveness process amongst the A&E SHOs, as demonstrated by their ability to perform a clinical audit project which ultimately improved practice. Research limitations/implications - This study has involved the construction and assessment of a teaching framework for junior doctors. The conclusions have been drawn on the basis of objective measures such as the completion of a clinical audit project which successfully improved practice. Thus, the publications of the findings may be considered in the category of a research paper. However, the authors accept that the assessment of a teaching programme's success and its portability to other departments or institutions can be highly subjective. Practical implications - With appropriate guidance and support, junior doctors are able to perform meaningful clinical effectiveness exercises at an early stage in their careers and within the constraints of short periods of employment. The structured teaching approach could be considered as a template which other institutions may wish to adopt to educate their own juniors. Originality/value - Despite the increasing importance of clinical audit in modern practice, the authors are not aware of any published teaching programmes which provide junior doctors with the necessary understanding of and skills required to take part in the clinical effectiveness process.

Notes: Sixteen children with motor difficulties and 16 controls, matched on age, gender and verbal I.Q., were assessed on the Test Of Motor Impairment, various graphic tasks and a measure of visuospatial discrimination. Poor perceptual and motor performance tended to co-occur but contrary to the visuospatial deficit account of clumsiness these abilities were uncorrelated even when attention was restricted to the less proficient children. There was no tendency for the control group's superiority in graphic reproduction to diminish when visual feedback was withheld. Some suggestions are offered concerning more appropriate methods for framing and testing causal deficit hypotheses.

Notes: Abstract— The Test of Motor Impairment (TOMI) was used to select 12 children with a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) and 12 age-matched controls. In an aiming task, movement latency, movement duration and its variability were significantly prolonged in the DCD group. In a coincidence timing version of the task, absolute timing error was significantly greater in the DCD group. The most robust chronometric effect for differentiating the two groups seemed to be the duration of movement when the target was small. Multiple regression showed that TOMI was a powerful indicator of movement duration.

Notes: Background: The aims of this study were to measure objectively the extent and severity of motor impairment in children with Asperger's syndrome and to determine whether the motor difficulties experienced by such children differed in any way from those classified as having a Specific Developmental Disorder of Motor Function (SDD-MF). Criteria derived from ICD 10-R were used to identify 11 children with Asperger's syndrome and a matched group of 9 children with a Specific Developmental Disorder of Motor Function. Children in both groups were required to have a verbal IQ of 80 or greater on the WISC IIIR. Method: The Autism Diagnostic Interview (Revised; Lord, Rutter, & LeCouteur, 1994) was used to identify features of AS in the first group and to exclude them in the latter. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (Henderson & Sugden, 1992) provided a standardised test of motor impairment. A Gesture Test based on that by Cermak, Coster, and Drake (1980) was used to assess the child's ability to mime the use of familiar tools and to imitate meaningless sequences of movements. Results: All the children with Asperger's syndrome turned out to meet our criterion for a diagnosis of motor impairment, five of the six most severely motor impaired children in the whole study being from this group. Performance of the Asperger group was also slightly poorer on the Gesture Test. The profile of performance on each test was examined in detail but no evidence of group differences in the pattern of impairment was found. Conclusions: This study is consistent with others suggesting a high prevalence of clumsiness in Asperger's syndrome. Our findings also attest to the widespread prevalence of motor impairment in developmental disorders and the problems such co-morbidity poses for attempts to posit discrete and functionally coherent impairments underlying distinct syndromes.

Notes: [Auszug] Abundance of oxygen has often been cited as a criterion for the diversification of life around the beginning of the Phanerozoic era. Some early theories suggested either that oxygen levels were not high enough to support complex respiring metazoa until the end of the Precambrian3, or that ...
